AP Headline on Iraq Conflict "Civil War Looms..."

It's sort of both. It's inaccurate to say that civil war looms because the warring sides don't have much in the way of weaponry. But there are very sharp differences between 3 or 4 warring sects in Iraq, and as much as I like democracy, I think the elections made the arguing worse.

I thought that if there was going to be a civil war, that it would have happened at the time of the elections.

I think this is just the media trying to tarnish the American portrayal of the war in Iraq.

Actually, civil war tends to break out immediately after elections. Think about the U.S. Civil War, which was a direct reaction to Abe Lincoln being elected. (Yes, there were tons of other factors, but much like the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand gets credit for setting off WWI, the 1860 election gets credit for starting the Civil War.)

This fear of civil war is not really caused by the elections. The bombing of several mosques is what has sparked it. The terrorist element in Iraq is trying to incite unrest between the Sunnis and the Shiites by bombing their mosques. It's working. This first started the day before gas prices jumped 20 cents over here.
