Anyone Play the Trumpet

I'm going to learn to play the trumpet in my spare time, as an alternative to gaming. I need some time off doing something fun. I already play trombone and have recently started playing gigs where I get paid to play. I think this will help me out with my tromboning.

Anyway, I'm going to e-bay a trumpet. I was wondering if there was anyone on here that plays trumpet who could remember what kind of trumpet they had when they first started and how much they (or their parents) paid for it. You don't have to be extremely accurate, just brand and price +-$100 should be fine.

I started out with a Bundy and moved to a silver Stradivarius. I recommend the Strad. It's fun and looks nice. Sorry, I have no idea how much was paid. It was a long time ago. 1977 for the Bundy and 1982 for the Strad. Although I can remember the store where we looked at it.

Well I know strad's go for over $1500 right now, and if I had that kind of money I'd invest in a professional trombone.

Wow! I know it wasn't THAT much. I'm sure it was below $1000. Hmmmm, I should probably get mine back in shape. It's all tarnished and the tuning slide is completely stuck. And there is a dent in the bell.

I also have a Bach Stradivarius.  They are excellent trumpets, but they are often over a grand.  (I need to get mine cleaned up because it's also pretty tarnished)

It's been a long time since I got my first trumpet, and it was bought for me, so I have no idea how much it was.

You can find cheap instruments for under $100, but for a decent quality beginner (new) trumpet you'll probably spend at least $200-300.  I think Yamaha and Bundy are supposed to have some good quality beginner products.

I have also gotten some used instruments at yard sales pretty cheap that were a decent quality.

I think it's time for me to dust off the old saxaphone and take some lessons.

I still have an old bach student model, it's the heigher student model tho. I'll probably upgrade to a strad sometime in the next few years- but i paid about 300-400 dollas for my bach, it's a good trumpet, nothing wrong with it. I'd definately reccomend it. I think on ebay you can get trumpets pretty cheap, they're probably cheap trumpets tho

Hey this will be a one time reply and i wont check this place again for a while cuz i never do but i felt like it for some reason right now. but i just thought I'd say that until monday I played the trumpet in the band (This is my Junior year). I quit because early morning rehersals were interfereing with stuff like prayer meetings at school and Campus Life after school. I really felt that it wasnt where I was supposed to be. Tomorow is my last private lesson... wont my teacher be suprised!

Anyway in response to your thing my first trumpet was purchased for 25 $ at a garage sale. Considering it's a pretty decent trumpet. As Strads go I think there are better trumpets for the money. Don't get angry its just how I feel. I think that when you buy a Bach alot of what you are paying for is a brand name. I have a Jupiter trumpet that was made in taiwan and cost 800ish new and got really good tone out of it, about as good as the people who play strads (however it is a bit lacking in action). When I think of professional trumpet players who play bachs, I think that there are alot better ways to go. To get the sound they want they sometimes replace the leadpipes with blackburn leadpipes and stuff. My band director (who probably isn't extremely happy with me right now) played a Yamaha pro model trumpet, and the tone was simply incredible. However, they made it using cheap metals and he said that over time it would corode and holes would appear in the trumpet. So he bought a Yamaha pro model used which wasnt as good as the first but it was what he could afford. Again no offense was ment to the people who play Strads right or wrong its just how i feel. Good luck with the trumpet thing. As far as mouthpieces go however, I would recommend picking up a UMI mouthpiece. (UMI makes bach and king and some other horns.) The one i have is really nice, I like it better than my bach one and it was cheaper too.
