Anyone for GvG?

I don't know about you guys, but I find GvG to be the most fun aspect of this game by far! I'm going to be getting a good headset soon and I'm really going to be itching for GvG. I'm not the right person to organize it though, because I'm new to the guild and probably also one of the least experienced/knowledgable GW players in the group. But if any of you guys would like to put something together, I'm all for it!

Obviously, we would need a well-balanced, well-designed team to do well at GvG, which can take a lot of preliminary work and planning - but if we wait around for someone to do all that work, we might never get started! If we can find an interested officer or experienced member to head up a GvG effort, then we could begin by just putting together interested folks, without worrying about optimizing everything until we've played for fun a few times. Then when we're ready to make a serious effort, we could evaluate our team, skill sets and strategies and get some of those "available to guildies" items distributed in order to improve our team.

It would be an honor for this nuker to pwn with you guys, although I can switch to spiker too or make a PvP player since my pre-sear is like lvl 4 so we can trap, spiker, nuke, etc.

sounds fun, i can either bring my healer, or make a pvp char. i'm not that experienced in pvp, much less gvg, but i guess i won't be unless i actually do it ;)

Let's give it a shot this Friday. I have a unique build that I'd like to try out. I'll hash it out over the next couple of days, but it involves lot's of Ra/Mos.

EDIT: After reading the skill description for Symbiosis, it appears that I read it wrong. It will not create uber-pets with 2k+ HP, rather, it will add approx 125 HP for each enchantment on THAT pet. So, with 2 enchants, a pet will have ~750 HP. Not so uber. I'll come up with something though-- probably a combo ranger spike/healing ball/smite group. I'll have time to theorize after Atown's HP run tonight.

We have done some, not much, GvG in the past. We have not won any matches in a very long time. In fact we haven't attempted since our last round of losses over a month ago.

I think the biggest problems with our guild doing GvG are:

1) We don't have a consistent group of players on at the same time who want to PvP, let alone GvG. Without a consistent team we struggle to pull enough people, with the right types of characters together.
2) GvG matches, even if we are totally outclassed, take a healthy amount of time, once we actually get our team pulled together, which seems to take even longer. The last couple attempts we made, we got 1-2 kills at best. That's a lot of time for so little reward, and it's no fun to be sitting there watching our team loose while your character is lying on the ground.
3) Frustration when loosing in GvG. When we have come out, obviously outclassed, from a match some members are frustrated because we don't seem to do well or even get much of an even footing. GvG is a much more complex form of PvP than HoH or Team Arenas. Since most of our guild doesn't have much PvP experience, the whole strategy of GvG on top of PvP is a bit much. Many of the matches I have participated in, we don't even have a team strategy when we start, or it goes out the window and we all start doing our own thing and running in different directions.

So, moving forward, we need to:

1) Work on building a PvP team base of people who want to PvP/GvG and build up the experience/expertise/excitement.
2) Build the "team build(s)" up so that we can pull together a group in a reasonable amount of time and get started. Practice with those teams under a person or 2 focused on that particular build and looking to improve it. Practice using Zaishen Challenge/Elite Challenge/Team Arenas/Hero's Ascent, then refine the build for GvG.
3) Spend time as a team watching in observer mode and discussing what is going on to learn strategies and builds. ArenaNet has also been promising a way to have in-guild practice for GvG in the future, this would be another good way to learn. From this we can build our own team build(s) and strategies further.

Up to this point we have had a scheduled Friday PvP Night at 10pm eastern. The last few weeks, no one logged in at that time has been interested. We have eventually gotten a few people together between 11pm and midnight for a few rounds in the team arenas, but no more than that. The only reason we have done 10pm up to this point is that I cannot log on much earlier than 9:15pm most nights. If someone else could step forward to lead the PvP team for an earlier time, I would love to have more PvP activity as a guild.

Pastori, I'd love to test out your uber-pet build, but is GvG the best format for this? I would think that we'd want to have people learn the build first, then start worrying about the Guild Lord, Guild Thief, Flag Stand, Trebuchet, 2 minute rez, etc. Maybe if we could scrimage against GC, or should we try it out in Hero's Ascent, Team Arena or even 4 player in Zaishen challenge?

I agree though, let's try a new team build on Friday for PvP Night. Pastori, please post the basics of the player and team build and a sign-up call. I will likely create a PvP only R/Mo. We can also discuss the best format to test the build in that thread.

I would like to see us grow a good team build and start doing serious GvG, I just don't want to kill our motivation again by going in unprepared and having our characters eating dirt through the next couple matches. If we do test OK after a few rounds in Team Arenas and/or Hero's Ascent, I have no problem moving to GvG with the build after discussing match and map strategy.

Sorry about the length of this post and thanks for letting me get this out.

10 eastern?? Sheesh, you people are on late lol! That's when I watch "Monk" on USA! *tips hat and skips down a country lane while whistling the theme to Mary Poppins*

Where do i sign up? This is what i've been looking for. I would step forward as a leader, but i lack the knowledge of the game for such a task. I hope one of you will step up and take the podium. I for one, will follow you and help build a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

I would step forward as a GvG officer too but all the people who suggest gvg or pvp are suggesting GvG at 10 o clock all the time

Personally, I have young children, so I don't get to play until after I read bedtime stories and tuck them in. Also, 10 Eastern is 7pm Pacific, so it's not that late for others.

There are those who would like to play earlier and I know and understand that. When I was promoted to officer it was to coordinate PvP activites. I would be happy to work with someone to coordinate an earlier session, I just won't be able to participate. I have put out calls for help in the past, but got no response.

I am looking for people who could volunteer to:
  • Pull the group together on the forum, and then in game for a scheduled event.
  • Keep everyone focused as you get set up and discuss strategy
  • Assure that all the required player types are covered for a build (i.e. Rangers or Elementalists instead of W/Mo's or Mesmers in a Spike team)
  • Assure that all jobs (target caller, flag carrier, ...) are covered before starting
  • Review team strategy if a map requires it (especially on GvG)
  • Report results back to the guild via the forum

Some of you may already be doing most of this in team arenas or even PvE without realizing it. If you think you could do this for PvP, please let me know here or through PM or even in-game whisper. If you want to chat about it a bit, I'd be happy to do that too.

inkelis - great! Don't let humility or a feeling of inexperience hold you back. We all need to learn and a big part of this is just stepping up to be a leader. The rest of the guild and team can provide some of the expertise as you learn too. I'll PM you to discuss with you further.

EDIT: CS - you posted again while I was typing. I'll PM you too.

I am thinking maybe have 2 PvP/GvG nights maybe can get a little more interest from Guildies. Most of the guys that want to PvP are on all during the week not just Weekends. I am now free on Mondays all day long maybe a little PvP on Monday evenings? Also just to let you guys know we have had a officer meeting there are some exciting things on the horizen I am sure you have noticed a little just from watching the forums. God bless!!

I've been watching GvG, top guild battles, and I've seen this build for W/E:

Healing Signet
"Watch Yourself!"
"Charge!"
Gale
Sever Artery/Penetrating Blow/Devestating Hammer
Gash/Executioners Strike/Crushing Blow
Frenzy
Sprint or Rez Sig

I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for the idea of GvG, and I will certainly join everyone on Friday evening. I'm very much looking forward to it!

I have communicated with the PvP coordinator privately and he has suggested that I could serve as a team captain on occasions where he might be unavailable, and help coordinate and organize the group. I'm willing, but I'm still new to the PvP aspect of Guild Wars and do not know all the builds and strategies that are important for GvG success. If you guys can accept that I have a lot of learning to do in the process and will probably make a lot of mistakes until I gain more experience, I will be glad to serve as an "understudy" team captain, unless someone else with more experience is able to make this committment. And if Friday at 10PM works for everyone else, I can make a solid committment for GvG on that day and time each week. Although 10PM is late, its not a school night and I think people rarely have regular committments for Friday night - so I hope we'll be able to make it a regular thing.

Based on the history of GvG that DZ has related, I share his concerns but also can see how re-kindling GvG can be really good for this group as a learning experience. If we are apt to get upset when we get dirt shoved in our faces by a better team, then we really need to learn how to be graceful in defeat as well as victory, and to focus on what we can do personally to make the team better. If we are apt to let our team members down by not honoring playing committments, then we need to learn how our actions or lack thereof affect others negatively. And if we tend to get everything placed on our own shoulders because nobody else wants to do the work, then we need to learn how to say "no" when we're asked to do too much and insist on dividing the responsibility fairly.

Alrighty, I came up with a plan for a 2 Warrior, 3 Ele, 3 Monk setup for GvG for this Friday.

2 Warrior/Eles carrying:

Counter Blow
Devastating Hammer (Elite)
"For Great Justice!"
Sprint
Irresistible Blow
Aftershock
Gale
Rez Signet

3 Ele Air Spikers (typical setup)
Air Attunement
Lightning Orb
Lightning Strike
Chain Lightning
Rez Signet
etc.

1 Prot Monk (you prot monks know the build better than me)
2 Healing monks (ditto)

Here's the scoop:

This build should be a way for us to quickly take out two targets at once. The two Warriors run in first, attempting to build up adrenaline for the two knockdown skills with For Great Justice. If Warrior gets blinded or SS'ed, there's always Gale. Alert the eles three seconds prior to using your knockdown skill so they have time to prepare their spike. Ideally, the 3 Chain lightnings should hit around the same time as Aftershock for massive spike damage. Quickly, the Air eles throw a Lightning Strike on the target to finish them. Just as quickly, they switch to the other warrior's target, repeat the same process with Lightning Orb in place of Chain.

Preferably, the Warriors will choose targets in the following priority:
1. Monks
2. Mesmers
3. Rangers
4. Ele
5. Necro
6. Warrior

While all this is going on, the Monks will be busy keeping themselves alive (since they'll probably be targeted first). Monks should bond each other as much as possible to spread damage evenly, then keep each other alive.

Advantages:
1. Aftershock recycles in just 10 seconds, roughly the amount of recycle that Devastating Hammer would have, so Ws will not drag the time between spikes.
2. We are already pretty decent at Air spiking on command, so there won't be a lot of learning involved.
3. Ample hex removal/buffs from monks

Disadvantages:
1. No hexes and/or debuffs to throw at enemy.
2. Aftershock is AoE, so we may accidentally take down a pet of an IWAY group.
3. Recharge time after first two spikes
4. Exhaustion can cause problems for both Eles and Warriors.

So, should we give this build a shot on Friday?

I'm sorry if anything I said seemed to indicate poor sportsmanship or support from guildmates. If anything, I would say that we have represented ourselves well, even in defeat. As for playing commitments, we seem to go in waves of interest in PvP. I'd hate for this latest wave to die after getting beaten in a few matches. My perception has been that we, myself included, retreat back to our PvE comfort zone.

I think the best way to counter this is to try out a few builds and find one that works for us. After we get a few wins under our belts, our confidence will be a bit higher and we can try out other options.

This Friday, the plan is to try out Pastori's team idea above. Originally, it was to involve enchanting pets to take advantage of a particular skill, but I don't remember which one. I need to look over this build in more detail and post my comments. Let's go ahead and discuss. If someone knows of a better skill set for one of the characters, speak up! I will likely be creating a PvP only character and am willing to try out pretty much any position in this build, but would like to practice a little before then, so please let us know what position you want to play on Friday.

I'm with Pastori on this build. Joeyface Babybird can be one of the W/E's, or Gob Bluth can be an Air Spiker. It doesn't matter to me.

Only thing is that I need to Cap Elemental Attunement for Gob, and Devastating Hammer for Joeyface. Will do that today.

OK, looking over the build, Owen would work well for one of the Air Spiker slots. I could probably look at one of the monk secondary skills for blindness and/or hex removal for the warriors.

Dust traps could be a good protection for the monks against IWAY, but they take a lot of energy. Maybe one of the Ele's could be secondary ranger and lay the trap to protect the monks. Also, be sure the air spikers all get the "approved" weapons to avoid the fast cast throwing off the spike. I'll have to make sure I still have them.

Also, do we want to try this out in Hero's Ascent before we have to deal with all the other mechanics of GvG?

EDIT (I will try to keep this updated as the thread moves along):
So Far we have:

Warrior 1:
Warrior 2: Malachi Pelleron (ArchAngel)
Ele 1: Owen the Restless (DZwart) (possible alt healer)
Ele 2: Fiona Dredd (one2dredd) (possible alt healer)
Ele 3: Gob Bluth (AmericanJudkins) (possible alt warrior)
Prot Monk:
Heal Monk 1: Elisha bar Shabot (Kidan)
Heal Monk 2:

I have included the alternate positions above. I could do a PvP only character to fill a monk slot (healer / condition/hex removal) is we get another air spiker.

I could probably stand in with Elisha for one of the heal monks. Especially, if I get that final 15 attribute point quest finished.

I'd be happy to help out with capping one of the elites or the 15 att point quest tonight or tomorrow to help get ready for Friday.
