Any objection to closing the ToJ IRC channel after Jan. 1, 2012?

I've been the only user in our IRC channel (#toj on GameSurge) for months now despite repeated attempts to get the IRC party started. I'm planning on shutting the channel down after the start of the new year unless anyone objects.

So, does anyone object?

I would think shutting it down would be ok, don't know the difference between IRC and steam's group chat, but I would think that ToJ's steam group chat would work for whatever needs we may have.

I did IRC a long long time ago when modems still had a number before them. It would probably be pretty good for me since I don't do voice but like cassette tapes, I think it's dead.

only time I ever visited there was when someone on steam told me to go there. I think it makes more sense to just use steam as the community chatroom when necessary...

I'm on IRC every day. But on enterthegame instead of gamesurge. Maybe I should give it another go and see if I can figure out how to have mIRC auto-login to more than one server at a time. I think I was too much of a mIRC noob back when I tried it before. Still, if it ended up being just the two of us, that would still be pretty pointless.

I had hoped to add a trivia bot to #cga at some point, but it would have taken hours to figure out how to run it on a remote box and no one volunteered to host the bot or help install it elsewhere.

I really enjoyed playing trivia in the IRC channel back in the day, but there's no guarantee even a trivia bot could motivate people to join and stay connected. :(

People have too short an attention span to type and read anymore. TS and Vent have destroyed mIRC. Sorry man.

I can't even get them to read what I type in TF2 most times.

I think it's less about attention spans and more about users who got online later than the "old guard" not being familiar with IRC and not wanting to learn a new (admittedly archaic and convoluted) protocol.

It's a shame that the IRC protocol was left to gather dust while new technologies emerged. There really is nothing quite like IRC. Steam Group chat is decent enough, but controls and options are severely limited in comparison to IRC. (Specifically, you can't run a trivia bot on Steam Group chat. :))

I can't even get them to read what I type in TF2 most times.
I think that has more to do with most players, especially in the ToJ TF2 server, being used to listening to voice comm rather than watching for text. We're a pretty chatty bunch and, in the heat of battle (especially when playing as Medic), I don't always think to look down and read chat text.

I've pondered from time to time about setting up an always-on server. It probably won't happen any time real soon though.

Last chance to object to closing the IRC channel!

Well, I just removed my IRC auto-login settings from Trillian. With no one in the channel, it will be removed eventually (though I'm not sure when).

If we ever decide to set up an IRC channel again, I'll leave it to someone else to create it.

You do realize that we have people (not many) in IRC every day, right? I started logging in ever since you posted this thread but didn't see you much. We had a new guy stop by in there today and really want to get involved with a christian community via IRC. I'm sticking around. Most of the "action" has been in #cga, not #toj

I did not know that.

I was only logging in to IRC when I was on my laptop (which meant only the evenings), so I wasn't idling 24/7.

Fortunately, I saved my Trillian settings, so I can pop them back in and rejoin.

Very cool!

I actually found the IRC before the forum, so I intend to use it frequently. It would be awesome if we could get a larger IRC community involved!

It would indeed. I think a trivia bot could bring in more new users.

I suppose it would help if I restored the Chat page on the ToJ web site, too. ^^;;
