New Natsume Yuujinchou this summer.

New Shakugan no Shana this fall.

Yesss.

This is gona be a great season. The past few seasons have been dry. Do you moe? Then you know how I feel. Sure we had ika musume which was awesome but to me, A-channel was a disappointment.

Absolute Win.
Agreed.

I feel like I've only been watching anime since the second Natsume Yuujinchou and Shakugan no Shana series to pass time. I've been waiting for both these new series for what feels like a very long time now.

Now if they can just greenlight a third Spice and Wolf series, I'm set.

As a Japanese major, all I have to say is...

...I never heard of any of these.

Oooh. Anime talk! Yay!

Alright. So yeah, I've gotten into my fair share of anime and keep up with some big series. But since I love you guys and trust your hearts, let me go ahead and ask you this.

What series do you recommend or do you guys seem to enjoy the most? I know Tek just mentioned 2, so I'll check them out next chance I get. Any other popular favorites among here?

Off Topic, got any j-dramas you tend to favor as well?

Shakugan no Shana.

Slightly off topic, I just found out that my library carries approximately 3+1/2 billion variants of Neon Genesis Evangelion (manga.) So I'm reading them all (in parallel.)

Okay so I have been looking at some good starting point for anime, aside from FullMetal and Dragon Ball...those are about the only two I have watched...I am like a few of the others on here, looking for some other good recommendations.

EDIT: I'm adding this disclaimer to the start of my post:

I've now been watching anime for about 17 years. I lost my interest in the standard fare a long time ago. I'm not interested in series like Naruto, Bleach, or Dragon Ball Z, but I don't dislike series just because they're popular. Samurai Champloo, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop are still among my favorite series.

But after seeing the same ideas done time and time and time and time again and beaten to death, I tend to watch for shows that break away from anime tropes and at least try to do something fresh. I'd rather watch Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (yes, it looks like a standard magical girl series, but don't be deceived) than Fairy Tail or One Piece.

And yes, I'm still upset that Denno Coil never got a US release. One of the best anime series in the last decade and it didn't get the respect and attention it deserved.

This season? Ano Hana (short name) and Hanasku Iroha.

Ano Hana is easily my favorite series this season, but it's not what most people unfamiliar expect when they think "anime."

Hanasaku Iroha is very good, but gets a little too shoujo-teary in parts. Still a great series though and one that the ladies will enjoy, too (a woefully rare treat among anime series these days). Be forewarned: There are a few fan service scenes in the first few episodes, but it's very sparse thereafter, mild by most anime standards, and not gratuitous.

Ao no Exorcist has been surprisingly not embarrassing for a shounen series--so far, anyway. I remember the first 20 or so episodes of Bleach were pretty great, too...before they pulled Rukia off-screen and the anime got bogged down in filler. Ugh.

Nichijou is a big disappointment after great series like Azumanga Dai-oh, K-On!!, Lucky Star, and Arakawa Under the Bridge. I'm fine with slice of life humor or crazy gag comedy so long as it's funny. Nichijou just isn't. Maybe it's because I'm not a native Japanese speaker and I'm missing all the jokes, but I'm not diggin' the series.

C has been okay, but it's hard to really get into the series when Eden of the East was superior in nearly every way.

Deadman Wonderland is just way too gory. Don't even.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko is odd but charming. It's a nice break from the POWER-UPU and emo srs bizniss anime. I like it, but I recognize it's probably not going to be a popular series.

Tiger & Bunny is campy smarter-than-average shounen fun. If Ano Hana is this season's Oscar award winning series, Tiger & Bunny is the summer buddy cop blockbuster. The production values are fantastic, the characters are likable, and the action is well done.

Dororon Enma-kun Meramera is a throwback to older anime series in art style and humor, but was a bit too crude in its humor for my taste. I'd say skip it.

Fireball Charming, like Fireball before it, is much funnier than any Disney project has any right to be. The series art is terrific-looking 3D, episodes are about 3 minutes long, and the humor, at least for me, is wonderful.

I think that sums up the series worth watching this season.

Not yet, no, but there's going to be a live action Arakawa Under the Bridge starting soon. I'll likely grab the first few episodes of that since I enjoyed the anime so much. I don't think Arakawa counts as a J-drama, though. :)
