Alternatives to 1&1?

Do we need a $3000 server? I thought we could build a cheaper rack server (see earlier posts). Piece together to me means make the very best cost-speed component decisions and then put those together.

Everyone in toj i think would be more than willing to help out financially if it means a fast server to call our own. I'm sure there are hidden cost to keep it going but with the server prices going up ($50 jump last count) it just seems to me if your christian friend is willing to allow a rack server connection for $50 a month it would be most beneficial to all in toj to try to get a rack server of toj's own.
I also think another issue if a decision from toj members with the rackmount is if it breaks down how are we to get it going again. You said we would have to ship it to your friend so that means to me you just can't run downtown and fix it. Somehow we would have to fix these types of problems or come up with some type of repair solution. Remote programs and auto turn on/off programs (rebooting) would help.

All of these issues should be addressed and try to get all bases covered.

I too have built/fixed several computers but it seems to me the rackmount is still just a computer from what I've been reading.

If we need to buy a prebuilt one then lets see what kind of price we can find on a very good rackmount for gaming. This probably puts a lot of research back on you because I don't know much about networking and what that type of box needs. I've been doing some research too. expensive they are. but still unsure of what to look for.
ps.you can teach this old dog new tricks. :)
pss.if no one else in toj wants to pursue this option please let me know and lock this post. thank you,CS

The company we would by it from would come out and fix it. Thats why we are looking at buying from a repitable company, they have onsite assistance for reparing and maintaining the machine.

As for rebooting the machine, we can do that remotly, which wont be very often, maybe once every 6 months when a new kernal update is out. Programs can be controlled, started, shut off, killed anytime. Not like windows where they dont always kill.

I'm about 6 hrs away from where the computer will be located. If needed I can drive to spokane and fix it (but thats what the company contract we bought the computer from does)

rofl, our members willing to support... priceless. Still laughing... Good luck guys. At the rate the donations come in, you should have the server up by 2010.

Of course unless there are actually some members out there that would like to prove me wrong...
