Moderator's note: Changed thread title from "Valve's lastest game to come out next week" to "Alien Swarm" to keep discussion timely.

So I see Valve is going to be releasing a new game Monday called Alien Swarm. It's 4 player co-op on and old unreal 2004 mod, good news it's free. Here's PC Gamer's blurb about it and here's steam's page. Might be good to try since it's nothing to lose.

Since when was Alien Swarm a Valve title?

This game dropped off the radar ages ago and I'd been hoping to find word of it ever since. I guess we know what happened to it now: Valve swallowed it up, Left 4 Dead-style.

Let's just hope the engine and matchmaking isn't as broken as in L4D2. (I still like L4D2, but you have to admit that projectile deletion, Charger physics, and wonky dedicated server support are complete and utter fail.)
 
Oh, weird! Hope the cool mod makes the jump to it's new engine well. Cheers to the mod team!

I think overall Valve leans decidedly toward the artistically side of game design as opposed to the programing side. That makes for more original but also more buggy games than other companies.

I'd play this new game but it costs to much I demand Valve pay me to play it :p .

Alien Swarm is a game and Source SDK release from a group of talented designers at Valve who were hired from the Mod community.

Available free of charge, the game thrusts players into an epic bug hunt featuring a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics. With your friends, form a squad of four distinct IAF Marine classes. Plan your attack using an unlockable arsenal of weapons with countless loadout configurations against a wide variety of aliens. Blaze your way through an overrun, off-world colony, eradicating the alien infestation in environments ranging from the icy planet's surface, to a subterranean lava-flooded mining facility.

Along with the game get the complete code base for Alien Swarm that features updates to the Source engine as well as the SDK. Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.

Sure, it's on the Source Engine, and that's unfortunate, but it's free.

And that means I will be downloading, installing, and playing it the day it becomes available. I <3 the UT2004 mod and I anticipate this is going to be a lot of fun, too (if only because more people will be playing it than played the criminally under-appreciated UT2004 mod).
 
ack, they delayed it (only a couple hours)

I'd imagine their server is being bombarded right now. :)

Okay, just played it for 30 mins... It is a very good game...however, if you only play with two people the other 2 spots are not filled by computer players and it makes the game very difficult...errrr...
 
Alien Swarm exceeds expectations. And is awesome. And is free.

And 19 people on my Steam Friends list were playing it earlier. All at the same time.

Unfortunately, I need to head to bed now, but I may play a bit before or after TF2sday tomorrow.
 
wow high approval rating... I would give props to Valve, but then it would just force them to mess it up.
 
That game is a lot of fun. Had a few audio glitches, but they were easily resolved by adjusting settings in game.
