A vision for the Christian gaming community

The Christian Gamers Alliance and the larger Christian gaming community is many things to many people. Our communities are connecting points where people make new friends, play games with old friends, encourage fellow Christians, glorify Christ in an even larger community (gamers) largely hostile to the Christian faith and moral absolutes, and supplement their involvement and attendance at local churches.

I'm quick to remind people the Christian Gamers Alliance, Tribe of Judah, and other CGA affiliates were never intended to serve as a substitute for joining and getting involved in a local church. I have always viewed our communities as supplements for those with church homes or bridges to those currently seeking a church home.

Perhaps the clearest way to explain my vision for the Alliance and the larger Christian gaming community is to compare it to a church lobby: A pastor does not preach sermons in the lobby; rather, church members meet and fellowship with one another in the lobby before and after service.

In the context of those seeking a church home, the lobby serves as a segue between the outside world and the church auditorium. Similarly, I want the Christian Gamers Alliance community to serve as a place where Christians not currently attending a local church have an opportunity to "warm up" to the idea of attending a local church.

My vision explains why Abba San's recent and current threads on local church attendance and involvement are so important to our community.

I hope my vision also clarifies our purpose, what the Alliance community is and (perhaps just as important) is not, and my passion as President of the CGA.

I believe our community has a firm grasp on what I loosely call "passive" ministry--creating a welcoming environment for Christians of various denominations and backgrounds to gather together, united first by a common faith and secondly by a common interest. I believe the community we've created is also welcoming to non-Christians interested in Christianity but still hesitant to take the next step.

It is my plan to explore more "active" ministries in the near future. As stated in other threads, I'm not really the sort of person who feels comfortable approaching a complete stranger and asking them where they think they would go if they died tonight. (It is not my intention to say such direct methods are invalid; I'm simply stating a personal preference.) While I imagine "active" ministries taking a more direct approach, we would continue using "passive" methods as well. ("Passive" is a misnomer as it actually takes a great deal of work on the part of many to develop and maintain a community like ours; I use the word "passive" only to contrast it with the as-of-yet vague "active" ministries I have in mind.)

I don't know if I'm clearly communicating my intent, but I wanted to share my heart and vision for the Alliance so there is no room for misunderstanding.

I'm also aware that some community members simply want to log in, play games with other Christians, and log off when done. There's a place for those Christians as well; our community is built to make a place for Christian gamers with varying levels of involvement.

TL;DR version: The Christian Gamers Alliance isn't a church; it's a supplement to church. The community we've built is (in my opinion) awesome, but I'm wanting to expand into more outgoing ministries while maintaining what we have already. I don't know exactly what the new, more outgoing ministries will look like, but I'll need Christian men and women of character to help make them happen.

Actually Tek there are numerous ways we could create or develop sub-sites that could be used in many ways to share the gospel. There is a book you might like called..."Net Casters" (I think is the name of it). It is ALL about how to use the internet and all that comes with that for evangelism and discipling other believers. Also it shows how others have used it as well. Also "Exponential" is a good book about how to develop growth and maturity in believers through as the title says proper exponential growth. Also read up on the Harris brothers who wrote "Do Hard Things" and "Start Here"...there main site I believe is "rebalution"...Again they are all about jumping into things and getting their hands dirty and also about how they used the internet as one way of doing that.

Currently, I am reading through "Evangelism Handbook" (around 600 pages), but it is an awesome read on how to remove the "'program driven" side of things and get to the missional side of reaching out in the context(s) we are in. Dr. Reid, a professor of mine when I was in college, has written this work as an all out magnum opus if you will on evangelism and making disciples. He deals very heavy with out generation which he calls the millinial generation (actually 1982 - on), I was born in 81 so I am still the gen x...but he shows how important it is to us the things we have at our disposel to witness, disciple, etc. :) I have also been praying for several months now and how I could better use the internet from my end to help spread the word, through studies, outreach, etc...so I will partner with you Tek in prayer and we can see what God has in store.

Don't know if this will help or not, but I hope it does. :) Also if I can help with developing some ideas let me know this is one of my areas of interest especially in evangelism and discipleship, that is using the internet, facebook, twitter, etc to "go and make disciples." :) Also its a real challenge every day to have on twitter a 140 character space to post a very unique message about the word, Jesus or something that will help disciple/evangelize others in Christ.

I don't think you could state it any more clearly, Tek. That is what I was looking for and found in CGA/ToJ/SoE/SOE. It has been a delight to be involved - an encouragement to the gaming part of my soul.

I'm glad God put it on your heart to form the CGA way back when and I'm looking forward to whatever/wherever God leads your heart for the future of CGA.

Tek, I read your TLDR and I think we've talked about this before. My brain can't handle reading a whole lot at the moment, but I'll kind of selfishly still write.

I think what CGA has right now is an awesome group of Christian gamers that get together and play games. I'd love to see more about God within our conversations and more intentional relationships being built through video games. Some of the people we are gaming with could be going through problems, and although all they may want is to just play the game with some people who don't cuss, in my opinion CGA should be more than just "a place to play where there isn't profanity." We serve this HUGE God, and we're spending time with other people who follow him... I really think we should strive away from lukewarmness, which in some cases could mean spending a lot of time playing video games with Christians and not spending time in the word of God or in prayer. In my opinion, if there are people who are coming here and spending all their time playing video games, then they need to be helped, because this life is and should be so much more than that. I'm speaking as someone who used to play video games during almost 100% of my free time.. and I still probably play more than I "should". (Not that video games = bad, but video games without bearing and fruit to an extent is worthless in the grand scheme of things. There are plenty of "fun" things I can do that also bear fruit :\....)
I hope I don't anger anyone, feel free to disagree and tell me why...

Anyways, I'd love to get involved in a gaming ministry, and obviously say what I am willing and unwilling to do :D

thanks
