a TERRIBLE idea

I can see it now, geeks in the middle of business meetings everywhere will pretend to be paying attention, while really, they are scanning the AH. Suddenly, in a triumphant outburst, he yells, "WHAT IDIOT PUT A WODIN'S LUCKY NECKLACE IN THE AH FOR 100 GOLD? THANKS MAN!"

Next day, he's fired.

This has me actually kinda upset

I feel ripped off already that my subscription dollars paid for the development of the crystal mount that but I have to pay extra for it

Now add-ons to your monthly sub fee - It should be either micro-transactions or monthly fee - now its going to be both

This is the kind of stuff that makes me consider other mmo's

I'm just mad that they're just starting with the iPhone. Need Android app!

Note that some of this functionality is already available via third-party services such as wowecon. Wowecon will send you price alerts and such based on the real-time scan data that's uploaded there. And wowecon charges for it. I have no issues with Blizz reclaiming some of that.

This kind of thing will make AH distortions even less likely. Even now, horribly underpriced items just stay that way as long as it takes someone to run auctioneer and buy it out. Which, I can't imagine is usually a very long time (I get "auction no longer exists" errors all the time, which implies that in the 3-4 minutes between my scan starting and ending, someone's snapped up an item). What it does do is give more people access to the auctions, which ironically probably will make the AH less profitable for folks on average.

And I really don't have an issue with a surcharge in this case. If you've got an iPhone and aren't logged into WoW as much as you'd like, then most likely you have a job and some spare cash, so why shouldn't Bliz have a go at that spare cash? Even casual players put in 5-10 hours a month of playtime a week ... so WoW is $1.50 - $3.00 per hour at most. Less than a cable bill, or a trip to the movies, or a game of bowling, etc. Bliz COULD almost certainly raise the monthly fee $1 per month (after all, the price hasn't changed in 5 years ... $1 per month increase is a 7% increase or 1.3 annualized). And keep their customers. That they're NOT doing that and are instead going after alternative sources that target people who can afford it. Pretty painless way to go.

I'm just waiting for when they have remote fishing. I'd be so all over that...but on the meantime, I think I'll do an AH scan.

I don't feel this way about it, because I don't feel like not having it will hinder my fun or ability to be successful in any way. As soon as something happens to prevent me from being as successful without spending extra money, then I will be upset.

yep!

and its not like the gameplay design is slacking because they are making the mounts or this addon so as long as the game quality is up to the high standard i expect it to be they can go make whatever lol

If anything, this might just stop people from working the AH for monies because so many more folk will be trying to do it.

Different people measure success in different ways. This wouldn't really affect people that only raid.

They haven't introduced those changes yet. They needed to start with cosmetic items (in which they provided some light advantages in regards to achievements), then move to economic items. I'm guessing they will move to leveling or character quantity advantages next, then possibly combat. However, this probably won't happen until late in Cataclysm.

We'll see I guess.

Two things:

If anyone asks, this is why I can never return to playing WoW. That is not an exaggeration or hyperbole: The auction house could--if I allowed it--eat my life.

Those who knew me when I played back in 2007 know that I spent as much time building wealth (buying and selling on the auction house, obtaining items to sell on the auction house) as I did questing, running instances, and playing in battlegrounds.

I grew so bored with questing and so frustrated with instances that I never leveled past 48--but I never gave up the auction house grind while I still played. I recently played WoW for 30 days and discovered that the auction house's siren call still lures me in. It's one of the main reasons I didn't subscribe when my 30 free days were over (the others being a general lack of time, frustrated expectations of greater advances in the MMO genre, and--the big one--unemployment).

Activision.

No one needs to play the AH to make tons of money anymore,, if i wanted to, i can make over 200g an hour just from fishing alone. Now from an hour of gathering various herbs, i can pull in right about 350g per hour. With mining, in a typical given hour , i normally can make up to150g p/h.

Jewel crafting is nice, if i sell a couple red gems in an hour, i just made close to 375g, if you have more gems in other colors, now your really racking in the money.

so it doesnt take a whole lot to make a descent amount in a very short time just selling off your inventory of your professions.

Not to mention maybe 100g for doing Hodir Dailies.

i think I will get this, just because sometimes I don't have time to log in and post my auctions on the weekends when the market is good for sellers. I can just spend 20 minutes posting auctions in the morning while I'm away for the weekend. And I have a good job, $3/month is not much.

Clarification: My issue is not with the cost of the service, or the ease of getting gold. It's that this offers a clear in-game advantage to players for real life money.

Fact is, anyone who purchases this service has access to the auction house while their character is anywhere in Azeroth. They need only to log out, do their thing on the AH, and log right back in. I have no issue with people being able to access it from work or school or anything, my issue lies with where the player's character is when he is able to use the AH.

An example I used while arguing this earlier today:
Two players are questing in the Storm Peaks, near K3. The players need one [Doohickey] to complete a quest. Neither of them has it.

Player 1 did not purchase the mobile AH. He hearths to Dalaran, takes the Ironforge portal, buys his [Doohickey], spams trade chat for a portal back to Dalaran, takes the Flight Path back to K3, and can now continue questing.

Player 2 does pay for the mobile AH. He logs out, buys the [Doohickey] on the AH, logs back in, grabs his [Doohickey] from the mailbox, and is ready to go.

This is an in-game advantage. Even more so than the Celestial Steed is.

All of that is no different than using an Auction House mule character.

I am kinda with Piano on this one...

This, just like that stupid mount they sold not too long ago (which is quite ugly I might add), are totally optional (the mount more so). I believe this service absolutely provides no real benefits.

When, like Piano said, they start selling more advantageous items such as better gear or faster mounts for real money, that is when I will NOT come back next summer.

I'd love to be able to free up that character slot.

You can use any character as an auction house mule. I also have all of my character slots full.

My old mule used to be Klangdon before I started leveling him to 80.

I don't think this service is anything serious or anything to argue over. I can't see a competitive advantage when you have to log out anyway. Chances are that you'll have other characters in a capital city on your account that you'd have to log out to access as well. I just don't see the point.

I am with Flame on this one - I foresee this as the advent of purchasable in game advantages

And if we are really lucky the walls of Gnomeragan will say

COKE and American Idol on Fox
