A sight rarely seen here !

Alas, they took them away. I won't get started on how other things have changed here in the last 8 years.

yeah but the speed limit is like 75 in the day and then slows down at night its odd but still fun to drive there

I remember stories that Avesther told me of traveling through Montana...and all the white crosses along the road where a car crash had claimed a life.....he must have been on those speed limitless roads. If so...I think it was likely a good thing they changed it.

Montana got rid of the "As you see fit" limits when they realised most drivers don't have enough brain matter to determine a safe operating speed for the conditions. We've been under the spell of an extreme winter storm here in Calgary and people are trying to do 50MPH in a 35MPH while the conditions call for 15MPG. The whole lot of them: Brain dead behind the wheel driving as if they want to be body dead too. I guess seeing as they are already half way there....

The phsycology of safety isn't discussed in that article, at least I didn't see it when I purused it.

It is completely reasonable to assume the use of the Interstates went up as people were told they would now be safer with speed limit enforcement. I think it is more likely that an increase in volume on the roads was a contributor to increase in fatalities.

The Autobahn in Germany has fewer deaths per mile than our interstate road in the US does. It sounds crazy... but according to the History Channel's Modern Marvels it's true.

It's all built into the society mores and in general the way they work. When they drive that's all they do. They don't try to talk on the phone or eat or anything else. All that may kill you at 120, 130 or even higher than that at mph! Not to mention their cars are built for the Autobahn. How many Ford Tauruses or Honda Accords do you see that regularly travel at 150+ mph? German cars are the best for a reason!

(The Autobahn is a much better road system for those speeds too...)

yeah the white crosses are all over the place in montana... kinda sad on how many there are.
my grandpa and me would go up there and camp at the yak river (for any of you montana ppl) and we would drive to the lil town troy for bait and supplies and it was sad seeing more crosses on the side of the road every year.
