A Noob Question

or two.. :) These are prolly very very noob questions, but I haven't played a proper MMO for any length of time since Shadowbane was cancelled.. :)

1. Mob name colors. What do they mean? I have seen a lot of red, and some blue and light blue, and a green one every now and then. In other MMO's I have played, I am used to them being the rank that they are in relation to your own. Meaning a red name would pose a harder threat to you, and you would get more exp. Same with light blue, but the other way, it would be very easy for you, and thus less experience. Blue would be matched, and thus the most experience. This doesn't seem to be the case in GW2? Most of the monsters I have come across have all been red, even when they are levels below me, and very easy to kill..

2. Experience Gain. This goes along with the first question.. Gaining exp seems to be difficult when just pounding mobs. I have read that you get more by just completing the heart quests, which I have, but have gotten different results with mobs. For example, when fighting Centaurus, I would sometimes only get 7 exp, but then get 100+ with a bonus of 8+.. I have read that you get bonuses based on the last time that particular mob was fought, but that didn't seem to be the case for me?

I don't think that's a noob question.

In GW, the convention has been that friendly NPCs are green and enemies are red. Sometimes, you'll see someone is green while they're just talking and turn to red when the battle begins. Alternatively, some of the "friendly contest" type skill challenges will be red while you're fighting them and when they get to a certain level they turn green to show that they gave up.

Blues are usually player characters (I think).

I don't know about the XP questions... But I know you get more for higher levels. My bet about your example would be that you were probably in an event and got 100 when the event was met (killing the last centaur) and 8 for killing that centaur... But that's just a guess. There were also daily-type achievements for killing 10 centaurs, or 10 different creatures, or whatever that might also have been kicking in.

There are also yellow mobs. You can attack them, but they won't aggro if you just want to run past them.

Awesome, thank you guys.

Aleron, just noticed the name.. My in game name has been Alleron.. Maybe its time for me to change it.. :)

As for the mob bonuses, I believe it has something to do with finishing mob chains. You grind out one mob (say, 20) and then switch to another mob. You keep switching the mob every dozen kills for a bonus. I think that's how it works, never tried it out myself.

For the EXP: This is from the wiki on how to gain EXP

Participating in events. Experience is awarded to each player based on how much they participate in an event.
Killing creatures. Full experience is awarded for each player involved and bonus experience is awarded based on how long a monster has been alive. In general, participation is defined as being responsible for at least 5-10% of damage dealt to an enemy.
Completing personal storyline steps.
Completing renown hearts.
Completing skill challenges.
Participating in dungeons.
Reviving players and NPCs.
Discovering new points of interest and waypoints.
Completing daily achievements.
Gathering and crafting.
Bonus experience is awarded for killing a mob that has been alive for a long time. This bonus experience can provide a large boost to your regular experience. It also provides a huge incentive to explore and find areas other players may not normally go in order to reap the benefits of the bonus experience.

For the colors:
Green = Friendly
Blue = Player
Gold = Guild-mate
Red = Enemy
Yellow = non-hostile enemy (he won't attack you if you don't attack him)

Those are what I know off the top of my head.

What would really be helpful is if we could find a way for nothing to pop up so that Abba would be able to get his 3 day lead.:cool:

I can kidnap him and take him to 6 Flags. I've been meaning to go there and ride the new Superman coaster anyway!

Knowing his "luck" (the way the passive will of God works in his life), he'll probably be the only person to fall off the rollercoaster and break his hands so he can't type or play for weeks.

We need to stick him in a padded, safe room ("panic room") where no bad stuff can happen to him until launch. :rolleyes:
