Hey all,

I've been wanting to get my A+ certification for a while and it seems like no where near me offers it. i would have to drive an hour an a half one way to get to someplace that does or 45min to a place that does but may end up costing me alot more than i would want to. Does any one have any alternatives or options im missing??

Don't get it?

A+ certs are a dime a dozen, and most employers don't put much stock into it, TBH.

How about just self study from ebooks and test simulations? I can send you many of the above if you want. I have most all of them. Or visit http://www.sadikhov.com/forum/index.php?showforum=12 and grab some study aids.

I would always recommend getting more certs. It shows some amt of dedication, you will learn something, and it will improve your life. Or you can be lazy and give up like the above poster would have you do.

I've been in IT for 6 years, and I know from firsthand experience that certs don't mean you know anything, they just mean you can pass a test.

I have interviewed guys with A+, Net+, and MCSE that can't troubleshoot their way out of a paper bag.

I'm not saying don't get it, I'm saying focus on the important stuff. Get experience doing that you want to do for a living. That's more valuable than alphabet soup acronyms after your name. Certs have their place, I currently hold a CCNA, but IMO A+ isn't worth the time/effort/money.

see thats the thing though. i have the skills and can fix almost anything for the most part, but i feel i would have trouble getting work because i dont have specific "work experience" nor a cert, so how do i get in on that mess? i could study but ive taken it before, 2x for a competition and did horrible because all the stuff is REALLY old

I'm A+ certified. It's a nice little addition to my resume, but that's about it.

Having a degree is worth far more than a certification. A degree + certifications are even better.

Employers value on certifications varys too. As a guy who's been doing IT for about 12 years now, I can say that it isn't always necessary, but it also doesn't hurt to have. There are some employers that actually require certain certifications in order to be considered (a major hospital in the area where I live requires their computer techs have A+ and a school district where I used to work requires the A+. I've also heard of places requiring the MCSE). Some employers couldn't care less. Then there are cases when you and another guy are equal candidates for a job, but the certification is the one thing making you stand out.
