Hi Andy, You may be able to solve your TV problem via Netflix/Hulu and a Roku player. That is what we use exclusively. Netflix has many TLC titles. Not sure about HGTV. Admittedly my wife would like to have Food Network, but it is hard for us to justify the cost for one or two channels. Also...

When I recommend the game to new players, I suggest that they watch some of the many great gameplay videos on YouTube. It really helped me understand how much you can do in this game.

I used to read quite a bit about DF on RockPaperShotgun.com. I appreciate the tileset recommendation, it makes the game look a bit more palatable. However, the complexity may keep me away until I have more time on my hands. Plus, there is no multi-player, and it is hard for me to justify playing...
