I am extremely impressed with StarCraft Heart of the Swarm

Bowser

Tribe of Judah StarCraft Series Chapter Leader
This game is so good, in every way.

Specifically I'm talking about the campaign.

I won't say any spoilers, but there is a lot of story driven stuff going on, far more so than in WoL. In WoL, I didn't feel like there was too much of a main story-line, but in this one I think the story-line is very well laid out and executed.

The dialogue is great. The music is phenomenal (I seriously love the music; it is SO good), and the cutscenes are so high quality it's really hard to distinguish them from pre-rendered cinematics. They are chocked full of emotion, superb scoring, and just excellent execution.

Even the missions are very fun and very unique. Many of them play more like an arcade game with a boss than they do a typical RTS game, which I love.

And lastly, the characters are great. Every one of them. They all have interesting back-stories and strengths that all contribute to the overall mission somehow. My personal favorite is Matt Horner, Raynor's right hand man.

I think I would give WoL 8/10. When compared to HoTS though I would say WoL is 7.5/10 and HoTS is a perfect 10/10. It improved I think in every way.

Your doctor called and wants you to drop your daily dosage of Fanboi meds. MMMmmmkkkkkkaaaaayyyy?

Seriously. Did you finish the campaign already?

I have only 2 questions about HotS after pre-ordering SC2:

Did they make Zerg a viable race for people who aren't freakishly talented at RTS games or can't spend 4 hours every day training? (Seriously, actual juggling is easier than managing Zerg macro with 3 or more bases.)

Is it on sale for $20 yet?

Until and unless I hear "Yes" to both those questions, no deal.

But hey, for those of you that weren't as emotionally attached to the Zerg as we knew them from Brood War as I was (read: pretty much every other person on this forum), have an awesome time and be sure to drop by ToJ's SC Chapter Forums!

You missed the sale; and it wasn't for $20, it was for $30.

Not sure about MP, but the Campaign zerg is a real blast. Completely different than multi-player.

I'd say that the game brought some of the confidence back that I had lost in Blizzard after Diablo 3. Solid story, and enough stuff to do to keep me busy for a little while. Also blizzard's animation department needs to just make a full length movie already. In the main storyline, the zerg felt like zerg should, but at that made the campaign just a little bit too easy imo. the multiplayer AI on the other hand can be downright evil.

Backlog + being disappointed by SC2 multiplayer (again, my personal opinion as a non-pro Zerg player) = not willing to spend more than $20 on an expansion pack.

I'm sure the single-player campaign is great, but I played far more less multiplayer SC2 than anticipated and I already have enough single-player games to likely last me a lifetime.

But, again, if you guys enjoy it, have at it. :) I look forward to playing the campaign when the price drops.

Lots of grumbly people in this thread!

I'd buy Heart of the Swarm if a) it weren't so 'spensive... $30 does sound reasonable though, and b) if I weren't so content with Just Cause 2, Guild Wars 2, Terraria, Anno 2070, and a few others right now (yeah I play them all at once. Why? Because backlogs are silly and sound like work!).

Edit: I just went to newegg and to my surprise HoS is *only* $40, not the $60 price everyone said it would be. I admit that's a lot for what could essentially be considered an expansion, but the way Blizz is arranging these games, each installment of SC2 could easily be considered a game in its own right.

I'm still not buying it because of the second reason I listed above, but the $40 price is only marginally north of reasonable. At least it isn't $60 like we all thought it was going to be.

I should have mentioned that I wouldn't have been nearly so disappointed by Zerg in SC2 if I weren't such a fan of Zerg in Brood War. It's like growing up watching Bugs Bunny cartoons then discovering this abomination was a real thing.

Remember, kids: Zerg aren't evil. They're just corrupted.
