LoE and Guilds in GW2

My reactions:

1) One hundred member cap seems strange for their idea of players having multiple guilds. If people are going to be spreading out their play time over several guilds, I would think guilds would need more members to balance that.

2) In my research so far of guilds that are currently forming, there are a lot of them that are listing themselves as "exclusive". I expect with what people are used to, that's not going to go away anytime soon.

3) I'm not sure what to make of the fact that guild influence is tied to server. It's nice to discourage server hopping, but it will take a while for people to settle into server after launch. A lot of guild influence earned early on could be completely wasted as populations settle and guilds figure out the server that would work best for them.

Thanks for the link.

I like the idea of requiring Officers to stay exclusive to one guild but asking a normal member to do that is too much in my opinion. Will be interesting to see how guilds enforce that.

I think the average guild that tries to restrict members from joining other guilds will find nearly all of their members breaking the rules. With the exception of the larger communities that can actually offer real benefit from being exclusive (ie consistent bonuses, grouping efforts, etc)

This system really puts power back into the hands of guild members. Over time I think we're going to see that reflected in how the successful guilds respond.

It really reinforces the idea that the guild is about the members, making guild leaderships try and offer as much as they can to keep people around.

I wouldn't join a guild that demanded "exclusivity". I'm already committed to 2 guilds in GW2 with possibly more as the game evolves. Currently LOE will be my main guild and the one I intend to represent the most, but I'm also joining some friends in LION and will probably "represent" them when I join them for events.

In the future, I may join other guilds for specialized content. For example, lets say there's one particular dungeon ingame that's fun to play thru and a guild that specializes in that dungeon. I may decide to join up with them just for dungeon runs. Similiar to GW today where there are speed clear guilds and town-owning faction guilds.

On the other hand I can understand a guild saying we require you to represent our guild 80 or 90% of the time that you are playing if you want an officer position and I can definitely understand guilds kicking out members that rarely represent them especially if they are at the member cap and want to recruit more members that will be active.

I agree with you Raven that there are real advantages to multiple guild memberships.

I think there's something to be said for being part of a not-Christian guild in order to have more of a witness in game.

I can see making a specific choice to join multiple guilds together out of a main guild. For example, perhaps we could identify a WvW or sPvP specific guild that would be guilds of choice for those of us that are interested in those areas. Since not everyone in LoE is going to be interested in those facets of the game, it'd be good to find a focused guild to run with while doing them, but still be connected with other members of LoE.

Aye, but if we have a network of guilds under the LoE name per-se then we are effectively splitting the Influence pool we could draw from.

I agree with STC.

And if we wanted to form "clans" or specialty groups (ie WvW, Dungeons, RP, etc) within the guild all we need to do is add another layer to the ranks.

I've seen FIRE doing something similar with their guild. Basically with them if a member of MiLK wants to join they label (rank) them (MiLK Guest). I could see us doing something similar with people's primary interest. (WvW, Dungeons, RP, etc)

Nothing wrong with being in multiple guilds (see signature) but as far as the alliance is concerned having as much influence in one pot is definitely they way to go unless we don't have all the information on the guild system yet.

I wasn't suggesting segmenting the guild up into different guilds according to focus. I was just thinking that if people were going to join multiple guilds, it might be nice to join secondary, so to speak, guilds together, for LoE cohesiveness.

It's kinda hard for me to get my head around the multiple guild thing for the very reason you mentioned. Why split up my ability to earn influence among many guilds, when I could be concentrating it on one guild, always representing it? On the other hand, I understand that in a general guild, the members on line at any given time will be spread about doing many separate things, and it would be helpful to be part of a guild where all the members are only doing what you're doing.

It'll be very interesting to see how it plays out in game.

You make some really good points.

I think what you're touching on is MUCH closer to what the ideal guild systems would look like and in a way that's what I'm hoping to achieve with some of my guild selections.

It may all come down to how many active members LoE has after launch and what the guild cap is set at by then.

I believe that the guilds can be looked at like churches, you can belong to one church but still visit another. It just depends where you want your influence points to go.
