Terraria tips thread

I know the wiki and other guides are out there but I thought it would be neat to hear what some of our own CGA players have learned. So let's make this thread a dedicated tips thread for anything in game related. Anyone have any good suggestions for new or experienced players?

Water + flippers + a good pick == exclusive mining territory.

My wife says: "if you make goggles (two lenses, a workbench with a chair next to it) and put them on as your social helmet, you get to keep your hairstyle." Something we both did.

A "Home" for NPCs must be at least 6 blocks high and 10 blocks wide on the inside, not including the walls. The Guide will take your first one, but he's not as picky -- mine lives in a 4x8 cell. But nobody else will come unless your room is at least 6x10.

Bombs hurt. They often hurt further than they explode, so give them a wide berth.

If you mine to the bottom of the world, Imps will not spawn do to no place for them too, on the screen at least. Makes mining easier.

Accidentally dropping a bomb in the CGA Server house is probably a bad idea....I'm just guessing tho. I also doubt that's why the work bench is on the other side of the room now.

Hitting 'Q' to throw a bomb at enemies is not very effective. Luckily I... I mean MY FRIEND... had another stack.

Use a piggy bank - the storage goes with your character to any map. Of course, so does the inventory you have on you.

Zombies can't open doors that aren't level with the ground they're on. Found that out kinda randomly.

Chaska - hey I noticed your "house" is not "standard" in order to get the NPC(s). Did you re-build it after they arrived or was it already like that? Just wondering because I am having the hardest time with my NPC(s).

I originally built my house that way...I do meet the minimum requirements in all my rooms. My rooms just happen to be more. Maybe check the % of your floor that's wood platforms?

When I recommend the game to new players, I suggest that they watch some of the many great gameplay videos on YouTube. It really helped me understand how much you can do in this game.

I know I am still learning new things...this is really a do it all type of game.

Jabberwocky - hey are you Tod? Did you just change your name? Just curious you have the same avatar.

I beginning to realize the map size best for one player is small, where as Medium is for 2-4, and 5+ is better played with the large world.

Okay so wood or stone for your house? Which do you prefer, and why?

One other thing...for some reason the NPCs will not show up at all for me...do I need to build their own house before they show up? I have my house in the right order...maybe I am missing something. Plus I have all the other requirements for some of the NPCs but none of them will show up.

Make sure you have a room in your house (with light source, table, chair, and door) for each NPC. Also, here is a thread about NPC requirements:

I figured out my problem...LOL I thought it said 70 copper and not 70 silver coins...DUH!!!!!

Stone. Why, because when you are hit by the Storm in Stormlands, you don't want wood. (Stormlands being the world that I made, and the Storm being my character, Stormbraids).
