Why I am leaving PC gaming...

Hey X, you seem to be where I am right now in my walk as well. I love gaming but there is something about PC gaming that seems to be a bit more of problem than others. Also when it comes to console/handheld gaming you can in a sense keep the same console for several years even after the newer ones come in (around 7-8ish years) even, and enjoy the games at a cheaper price. :)
 
Call me when they make Starcraft 2 for Wii. *clutches keyboard*
 
X, I know where you are coming from. Especially when it comes to cost. I have owned my current computer since 2006; the longest I have owned any computer. Prior that that I upgraded once every two years. I have throttled back on keeping up with the latest games. I have never played Crysis and I don't even know if Brink will run on this thing. I stick with games that will run and I am no hurry to plunk down any more cash to play PC games. I have learned to tailor my gaming to the limits of my machine, but so far that has not been a major issue for the games I play.

I have considered switching to consoles exclusively, but I am a keyboard and mouse junky and playing an FPS with a joystick just feels wrong. ;)

This sounds like my situation also. Brink looks interesting but my computer doesn't even come close...LOL So I am going back several years and looking through steam at some older games that might be interesting that I missed over the years. Sacred 2 is one I am looking at picking up and maybe a few others. Hey, I haven't even played Plants Vs. Zombies...sad I know.

I would have to disagree on the having to update the computer every year though. The computer I just sold to Icthus hasn't been upgraded at all - spent $800 on it in December of 2008 and when I sold it to him it ran the Dragon Age II demo on full graphics with no hiccups.

In the end it is whatever works for you! I am glad you found something that works.

The way Microsoft, Adobe and general hardware manufactures are I'll have to upgrade my PC eventually to interact with newer programs/hardware. Talking a few weeks ago with Asus they are going to stop making motherboards that work with IDE devices like my old hard drives. Digital Painting is taxing too. I still want a system that doesn't lag with each high res brush stroke T_T .

Basically I take the opposite tack playing no console games anymore and only PC games as I can actually use my PC for business. I certainly see how it's more expensive upgrading multiple peoples computers but for just upgrading mine it seems cheaper. I don't actually buy that many games either. When I do Steam sales on older games are pretty cheap.

Ahhhh what about the Minecraft Chapter Zion have you resigned yet?

Wait what? Sacred 2? How does it compare with Sacred Platinum? Do we still get mortar and flame thrower wielding dwarfs? Is it less bu-bu-bu-buggy? Sorry about the hijack, must go do penance now.
 
I have saved a lot of money by staying well behind the curve. I usually don't buy games until they are deeply discounted. Shoot, I didn't buy Battlefield 2 until last year. :)
 
yeah that is what I am having to do now days...but hey they are still fun...in fact I am finding that most of the older games are sometimes more fun than the newer stuff...

Yeah, if everyone I played with could maintain their own PC, it wouldn't be an issue for me, or if I made more than $15k/yr >_> However, I have to admit I am really enjoying the Console only gaming so far...

Yeah, it all depends on what you buy sometimes...I tend to hit the cheaper hardware since I am usually buying 3 of them, and in turn, they go out quicker... I did not plan on doing ANY upgrades this year, however, my video card went out, so I had to replace it...

I have been in deep thought, and I kinda waiting out the MC thing...mainly since they have announced porting the game to other mediums (mobile, maybe even Xbox Live)...

Hehehe...I wish I could just give it away...however, currently living at our inlaws because we cannot afford a place to live, makes me have to sell it if anything...lol... However, my wife talked me out of selling my PC due to me using it for web development and programming...

I think that cloud computing may eventually eliminate our hardware upgrade problems. OnLive is a good example of what is possible.
 
I agree it's expensive... no one minds my $14.95 a month and computer upgrades/changes every now and then but I come from a small family. If my parents were poorer and had 4 children, there would certainly be issues.

*one of the reasons why I advocate smaller families but not gona go offtopic into that but something to consider if you're a gamer :D*
