Business Cards

I am going to a graphic designers association lunch the day after tomorrow and hoping to get an opportunity for a job. Here is the business card I made for myself. What do y'all think?

I've been doing typesetting for printed materials including business cards off and on for the past 15 years. Artwork for a use needs to be a blend of both form and function. Artistically that card is ok function wise the center area on the front should be enlarged. I have an imposed limit of 6 points minimum on any text I place and try to make it larger if possible. The text on that card is slightly below 6 points (assuming it's a normal 3.5 by 2 business card). Yes I know you will lose some negative space and impact by making the center larger but it needs to be easily readable too.

Also if you want a truer opinion from people here you may want to make that sample smaller perhaps not actual size but maybe 80% of what it is now. It's true artwork is harder to read on a computer screen than when printed but it's deceptive right now on how easy the actual card would be to read.

You may also want to make the text "design that will turn heads!" a different color for more impact but up to you.

Finally I'd like to see different kinds of your work. I've seen a couple samples, they don't look bad but they look same'ish. It's my opinion if you want a job you'll want a more diverse portfolio.

So you know I am not a complete newb here are my best cards. I know it's not great but it shows I at least know something. I blew them up too just not as much. Normally I submit any samples to customers actual size either 300 or 144 dpi, pdf format. Artwork for print is 600 dpi.

I agree with Gerbil on the 'design that will turn heads' text. Good line, but imo that should be something that pops a bit more. Nice looking card overall.

I like the second one better than the blue one. The blue has some nice textures and things but because of the same color throughout your name gets a bit lost and the slogan. The second one is very simple and easy to read and has nice space to it. I might choose a different font for your name on the card though..or color. Not a bold black...uhg i feel like my typography teacher.

Yea I thought they were front and back, if they are two separate cards the bottom is definitely better. Sometimes less is more.

I am fairly certain it is one card otherwise there is no information on the top one :p . I think the idea is to be red on one side and blue on the other.

Plus he said "the business card".

Thanks for the input! It is the front and back on one card, but Ash pointed out that those didn't really have any flow to them... because of the color change. So I changed the background to be red and a little more simple. I also changed the font sizes on the front of the card. My contact info is 8pt and my name is 14pt. Is that size big enough?

Here is the updated card...

I liked the blue pill / red pill two sided color scheme personally. :) I also agree that slogan needs to stand out more.

I always wondered why people don't take more advantage of the very top of the business card. That is all that ever shows when its in my wallet.

Cards R Old skuul.

Get bump for your iPhone and give them the info directly.

Or carry around an iPad and have your work displayed on your chest.

I make many things 8 point-ish so good deal. I tend to only go lower if the design or amount of text prohibits it. Always keep in mind your artwork must serve both form and function. If you don't we'll end up with some modern art blech XD :p .

Because of limited time and the fact that I'm printing them on Avery business card sheets (/shudder) I just printed the front side and left off the red back side.

i like the red better then the original blue. how about having red ones, blue ones, yellow ones, etc. differant colors, hold you're stack of cards when handing them out and ask them to pick their favorite color....

I love that idea. When I end up getting them printed professionally I might do that. That'd be cool!

I saw his cards printed and his application. They look really sharp! I told him to give me one :P

Keep praying for those who still need jobs please! Bill went to a graphic design meeting a few days ago and that day he was on the phone with someone possibly getting contract work! Awesome encouragement to finally see some progress on the job end. Go Bill :) <3
