From notashamed, Tribe of Judah's Accounts Manager:
The next due date for this is April 9th, so we will need $60 in donations prior to April 1st.
Please visit the Support ToJ page to donate toward the Ventrilo server.

When donating, please include a comment that you are donating toward the Vent server.

There you go - glad to help.

TOJ is a big part of my fun time experience - well worth it.

We have a vent server? I thought we had TS

I believe we have both.

TS is free but often not preferred.

Vent is what most MMO guilds like. Therefore, CGA usually allows them to pool funds and rents a server together.

Some crazy person came up with this idea to give Tek more work.

MMO world is changing however. Vent is now the least popular if you go by general forum spam. TS3 has so many improvements that many people are flocking back to it. Mumble has really taken off and is becoming the Vent of the new season. I see more and more guilds switching to Mumble. Skype is popular and finally valid for MMOs as the new group availability is really well done.

In my personal opinion, putting money towards Vent is not as good as it once was. TS3 is a superior product now. If past bias towards TS2 forces a guild to choose a TS alternative Mumble is much better then Vent in just about every way. Most specifically the clarity of voice, the auto volume normalization and noise cancelling and the extreme low latency. Also Mumble is the only one to provide positional support in WoW and other MMOs. This lets you hear your teammates as though they are speaking from their relative position in-game.

It depends. Only a few chapters use Ventrilo, but those same chapters cover the expense of renting a Vent server, so I have no issue with offering both TeamSpeak and Vent.

And while TS is free, the server that the CGA rents to run the TS server and the forums costs $395 per year.

Actually, Tribe of Judah uses the Christian Gamers Alliance TeamSpeak Server while the Ventrilo server we rent is used and funded by Tribe of Judah members.

Put simply: CGA runs the TS server ToJ members use, ToJ runs the Vent server ToJ members use.

Crazy indeed. :D

But it really isn't much more work. I call for donations every few months and members have always been swift to donate. Our Accounts Manager handles most of the work and our Server Admins handle the day-to-day operations and moderation.

I'm fine with switching to Mumble and I'm fine with sticking with Vent. I'll leave it to the guilds to decide which they prefer. I just need to know if there's a general consensus in favor of switching to Mumble so I can work with our Accounts Manager to make the transition.

But again, it's up to the guilds. They can choose whatever type of server they like so long as they cover the expense of renting it.

Yeah, I'd talked to Tek about doing a Dolby Axon pilot/trial as well. But ultimately didn't go anywhere, largely because I didn't see how putting another option out there would add any value in the short-term.

For better or worse, WoW-Red, the vastly majority user of the existing vent server ... has just a huge amount of inertia with vent. It ain't broke. It does what folks need it to do. While we have gotten through other transition in the past relatively seamlessly, moving form one vent server to another ... that's a long way short of getting people to install a new client and reconfigure settings and whatever else. To make it work, would really need to stop one service and transition to another ... having part of the guild on TS and part on Vent ... would just be a mess. Again, I'm speaking to the single WoW-Red entity on the assumption that's 90% of the current activity/usage. For Red, the voice forum really isn't about what's best for raiding or BGs or whatever ... it's about providing another piece of glue to stick the community together. It also happens to help raiding ... but we're not optimizing around raiding.

Anyhow, I'm sure you're right, ewoks, about there being other options that are better out there. But I think it will take some catalyzing event to get us to move ... and I don't see that catalyst out there right now. If a "new game" (Rift? KotOR when it comes) wants to try out something else form the get-go, that's a good opportunity ... but you lose perhaps some opportunity to cross-game chat like we had with WoW/WAR (not sure at all what Toj-Rift uses right now?) Anyhow, unless Tek and notashamed aren't getting financial support for vent to the extent or timeliness needed (and I don't think that's the case) ... I vote "kick the can down the road" and focus on other priorities, like designing tabards.
