Guildwars Dilema

Unfetered

New Member
Ok so I have had GW since launch. I played on and off and never really got far until EoTN came out and Ewok helped me power level my ranger/rit to 20.

The problems I have are :

1. I do not like Rit and want to change secondary but that requires Ascension
2. My ranger is not very well geared so gets torn to shreds in most places
3. I have little money due to not really going through the game at a regular pace
4. I love pvp

So my questions are as follows:

1. Should I stick with the ranger and do the ascension quests?
2. Level a new class up to 20 and start fresh?

I have very little knowledge of all that guildwars has to offer and am a noob in all aspects. I have all expansions and play around 4-5 hours a night.

Thanks for any tips or help.

PS: I want a moss spider or black widow for whatever ranger i pick which is best bet and easiest to achieve?

Ascension in Proph is easy when you go as a beastmaster, carry just bm skills in the skill bar and let the pet do the work. Set your R/Rit for Spinter/Barrage for everything else and you will find a Ranger is really a pretty powerful Character. But that is just this permanewbs opinion, others may have a different outlook.

Aside from the beast part I have been running as splinter barrage setup and it is fun to a point, my gear makes me entirely to squishy and as I have not played enough am needing to get a pet that is higher than the one i have level 5.

I was going to try for a spider though have heard it is really hard to do.

As far as ascension is it difficult to do solo?

Ascension in Proph is solo after the initial 3 desert missions. Augry Rock can only be done solo. Before solutions can be offered to armour do you have access to all 3 campaigns?
Which would also change the outlook on Ascension too.

yes i have all expansions (proph, faction, nightfall and EoTN)

Easiest way I found to Ascend is brining the Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support (EotN skill), an echo or two to double or triple your assassins, and a Asura summoning skill from the polymock quest line in EotN. You can also bring "you move like a dwarf!" or something, but don't add any other skills (unless there is a EotN healing skill I'm unaware of). The Doppelganger can not use these skills and is defenseless... or offens-less. if that was a word.

-Proph.

I have the assassin support not sure about the other though. Man I wish i would of not gone to wow I would understand most of this stuff lol

Are you wearing max armour now? If not the cheapest route, besides running all over creation looking for collectors is to get max armour in Istan at the Consulate Docks. Of course runes and insignia are a matter of what you want to specialize in, and there are those far more competent to guide you there. Most of my 'toons are set up as generalists.

not even sure what max armor is. I think mine is 60 or 75 right now does that sound right? Weapon wise i am using that bonus weapon sundering darksteel bow of hope it kills something.

yeah, I can relate, havn't looked back to WoW since I left a few years back, been in other MMO's though, wish I had stuck with GW myself though.

First things first.

Use the wiki. Use the wiki. And use the wiki. Stuck on a quest? Press F10 and search it up. Bookmark the wiki. It changed my Assassin game from dying every few seconds into a melee beast who can toe-to-toe at the front line. It made playing Ritualist a blast since I know what my role is. When in doubt, wiki it out. :p

As for armor, getting a Docks run can get you max armor for rather cheap items. This is a Proph toon, right?

One of the nice things about GW though - is you can always come back in. Even though I have a character that has "beaten the game" there is so much more gaming to do. That is with him AND being able to start a new character and do it all again - from another angle.

Factions originally i think, not sure anymore I have access to all expansions though.

70 is max armour for Ranger. The Darksteel is not too bad, but a custom built gold bow can be more versatile, take a max gold bow, add the right string, grip, and inscriptions for really good results. You will eventually find that all 4 weapons slots will be take up by different bows for different reasons. Look for Ursen in game and we will see what we can do. btw are you Irish?

Awesome will do. And what makes you think that im Irish?

Ok, I have a question regarding your pet. Last night ingame you stated that you wanted a Moss Spider for a pet. Unfortunately, you've zeroed in on one of the most expensive pets and one of the hardest to obtain ingame. Period.

Moss spider eggs typically sell for 15-25k. The price may be a bit more or less. I haven't priced one in awhile now. If you truly want a moss spider you need to pony up the cash and buy an egg from a player or hope to get lucky with Nicky's gifts one week.

However...... you've been away from the game for awhile so you may not even know what pets are available to you. There are dozens to choose from and there is another spider ingame that you can pick for a pet.

This spider also is not easy to obtain, but slightly better than the moss spider egg. You'll need a level 20 ascended character that can bring along Charm Animal and some competent heroes. You head into the UW, complete a few quests and a spider is available for you to charm. You don't have to do this on your ranger if you don't want to. Your other character can take the spider to the menagerie and your ranger can tame it there.

You probably don't have the playing skills yet to do this on your own, but I can help you navigate the required sections of the UW. And I love any excuse to head down into the UW.

All this pet talk makes me want to get out my new Rainbow Phoenix and level him up.

Yea that was the main reason i want it. I like being different. In WoW I walked from durotar at level 10 to tedresill just to get an owl as an orc at level 10. That is me. I don't have much gold on GW yet and did my 5 turn ins and Keero allowed me to give him mats for his 5 so I am trying.

I do not know this game even closely. Ascending, or anything high level I am clueless. I will get my moss spider sooner or later or a black widow from UW but trying to path yourself through a game this indepth is rather difficult. So much to learn.

I am not a noob to GW I have had it since launch just never did anything high level i was a low level proph pvper until Ewok helped powerlevel me to 20 to play EoTN with him on prelaunch.

Thanks for the advice though I will look into it.

As a guy who likes ranger pets, I recommend getting into that kind of play now with a critter that you can get fairly easily... So that by the time you get your dream pet, you've got the experience with the builds to level him easily.

It doesn't really waste time to start a wolf or bear or whatever, level it, and switch to a spider later... Especially with the changes they've made to the Zaishen Menagerie so that you can keep the changes you've made. The differences between animals are almost nill aside from the cosmetic effects.

P.S. Though I've never mastered it and it's a little niche-y, it is way fun to equip your heroes with pets and go out with a whole wolf pack or lion pride. I'd love to see some really good team builds that maximize that.
