TF2 Questions

Tribe of Judah Guild Wars Chapter Leader
So as I am sitting here waiting for a slot to open up and I figured I could finally ask some of those burning questions I have about TF2.

First off: How do you guys get those hats and weapons and upgrades? I seem to do a tad better playing pyro/soldier, any tips for those classes? And maybe just some other general things I should know.

Most items can be earned through achievements, though some just "drop" randomly. Valve recently introduced crafting, which allows players to take two or more items and craft new ones; I haven't tried it out yet.

Read this thread first. Then spectate Keero when he plays Pyro.

And maybe just some other general things I should know.
Shoot the Medic first. Unless it's me. Then let me pass by. I'm harmless.

In general all the classes have strengths and weaknesses even if you plan to play a certain class it's good to get a understanding of them all so you know what situations you can take on and can't.

For Pyro you can get a good number of kills as a beginner by spy checking (flame everywhere a spy would go). Pyros are an ambush class as they do not have good long range capabilities. Flank and then flame continuously once close in. Once you learn the how much fire damages for you will know when you can retreat leaving enemies to burn to death. Once you get better you will be using the combos "Light enemy on fire/air blast enemy into air/shotgun finish him" or "Light enemy on fire/air blast enemy into air/Axetinguisher finish him" (axetinguisher is an earned weapon).

For Soldier spamming rockets at range can get you some easy kills. You will be using the splash damage on the regular rocket launcher for kills more than direct hits. More complicated techniques involve popping enemies into the air by shooting rockets at their feet then shooting them in the air again with the shotgun (or another rocket if you are really good). Rocket jumping is a useful talent to learn later but for beginners not really that necessary.

Also learning the maps can help you out a lot in terms of where to get hp or where intel or capture points are. It's even more important to have this knowledge for other classes like Engineer who rely on ammo and good sg locations. If you want to learn the stock maps you can create your own server sometime so you can explore them. On the main screen...

1. Click create server.

2. Select your map (stock maps are all up top ending with hydro on the list. Custom maps are below. We don't run arena often so you may not want to bother looking at those).

3. Click the game tab on the window and input a password. (so no one can join)

4. Hit start

Also if you are concerned about your stats being messed up type sv_cheats 1 in console (console is enabled under options, keyboard, advanced). This will turn off stat tracking so you don't get "you have lived the longest as" while looking around a map. You'll have to re-input that ever time you change maps too. Of course if you don't care about stats it doesn't matter :).

After tonight's go at it, I have some more questions:
What exactly does Uber mean in TF2? Invincible for 10 seconds? Invincible for the next 500dmg? And what should you do when going against an Uber'ed pair?

Again with the weapon/items that you pick up: Is there like at least one item per match? Would/should I join an empty server and just go around trying to find stuff? Are they really worth it?

Thanks guys, I feel like I played a lot better this time around and I actually was able to do some damage and feel semi-leet ;) And I got to kill Tek at least once :D

Also: Is there like a TF2wiki? I could probably answer most of my questions there.

Since you've been playing Pyro mostly, I would suggest this video (1 of 3). Good tutorials on what a "good/decent" pyro should be doing.

Uber: Both the medic and his partner are invulnerable for 10 seconds, no matter the damage, they can't die. This is mainly used to break through defenses. As a pyro, you MUST make sure to foil this tactic with the right click. That's the only thing you should be doing when a Uber rolls in. Many players try to flame the ubered pair, but that does nothing. You can push the Medic away (as they are "lighter", they launch farther), thus breaking that medic beam range.

Weapons and items can be gotten through playing, simple as that. They "drop" randomly, and some can be unlocked through meeting certain requirements (every few Achievements earns you an item to use.)

And yes, there's a TF2 wiki, google is your friend. :p

Yeah, ironically I did that AFTER I posted, so I answered some of my own questions, I just felt like going to bed after that instead of coming back here and editing my post ;)

I still think this is a horrible idea, and one of the reasons I rarely play TF2.

Yeah not a fan of random weapons through I just got mine through achievements so I am indifferent to the dropped weapons (though I also find achievements pointless on all Steam games but I digress :p). Personally I'd just give new weapons to players since they alter gameplay or have them earned via simple achievements like win on a specific map to encourage variety in what maps are played (too many of the same maps are played on servers imo). Hats are a different matter though I like the concept of being able to earn something special that not everyone has.

Note: In spite of it's shortcomings TF2 remains one of my favorite video games of all time :).

I still prefer TFC to TF2 anyday, but more people play TF2 so if/when I do play I play TF2.
