Suggestions for my newer PC, again, again...

I've looked and looked and looked....

Everything is okay except the Motherboards, I don't know which supports what!

Using my Computer case (ATX), Sata2 HDD, Windows XP 32-bit OS and hopefully my PSU (500Watt).

I can only get it from Newegg.ca because the other places, old products are obsolete, like the Phenom x4.

Budget: $1000-1500 CAD/Canadian Dollars

Quad Core CPUs

I'd like to get the cheapest i7 but not sure if it can use a 500Watt PSU.

Video cards, I prefer eVGA but from what Hescominsoon tells me, its better for AMD with ATI and Intel with Nvidia.

I hope this eVGA.

If not: these are the best choices; from Highest Price to Lowest; $100-200. (That can use 500W PSU)

For Ram, I don't care since I'm going to be using Windows XP OS. 2GB is okay for me. You can look for one for me or not. Doesn't matter.

Motherboard, however, I don't know which can use Quad Core CPU, whichever Video card, thats limited to 500Watts and using a ATX size.

IF you can do it, I'd be greatly appreciated.

Otherwise, I could donate (Via Paypal) to someone/person for their hard work of searching for my newer PC, again, again...

the gts250 is going to be slower than the 4870 and eat more power. either works jsut amd with ati is one drivers for everything(the catalyst series) while for an intel system or intel/nvidia it's multiples.

pick your poison. you can use either ati or nividia vid cards.

loook at the wattage ratings. Also figure in a new psu if your current one is over 2 years old due to the atx spec changing. for your system it's going to be most likely 600 watts. you can try your 500. The i7 requires ram in triples..so you ahve to buy them in matched sets of three

if you decide the amd the choices change..ram is only in paris, ati mobos work well along with ati vid BUT you can use nvidia mobos and nividia crds(i wouldn't though)...etc etc etc.

A couple of cents to throw in, if you ever plan on using Linux or the new Google Chrome OS, only go nVidia, their cards are a lot more friendly for Linux, and Linux based... Some ATI cards just will plain out not work...others will give you problems...

The ATI drivers are getting better. They even support compiz and crossfire setups now. That said nvidia is still light years ahead in terms of performance on linux.
 
 
Since I've never order on-line before, I'm gonna just order the cheapest item I have and see how it goes.

If it goes well, I'll get all of them.

If not, then I'll have to go for the alternative, a couple miles down.

Just before I wanted to purchase on-line, double checked at NCIX.com and shocked most of items are LOWER than Newegg.ca!

Any idea what is the difference between a Stepping Quad Core and Regular Quad Core?

Newegg isn't usually the cheapest. But they do tend to carry the most products for reasonable prices. It is best to get a few stores you trust and order parts where they are cheapest. One of the nice things is newegg generally ships it out the same day (if you order early enough).

Usually stepping refers to a generation in manufacturing. CPUs end up with their final designation usually after passing a battery of tests. For example a 3Ghz processor may run too hot and be sold as a 2.8Ghz, etc. So you could end up with a CPU that would easily clock high provided adequate cooling.

They are probably charging more for verifying that those CPU come from that particular batch.

For PSUs you really need to look up reviews to see how well they keep the voltage stable. Usually a good reviewer will test the variance across load and idle as well as place it in a room with no cooling to stress the components.

I have an 500w enermax liberty in my computer. It has been running since 2006 or so when I originally built this machine and the ps has continued to deliver after being rebuilt several times. I don't have any experience with anything else, as the ps generally works or your very angry.

Go for a motherboard with passive cooling, just make sure you are passing enough air through your case. Not only will it eliminate some of the noise, but it will prevent you from having something that sounds like a mix between a hard drive dying and a chainsaw. My last motherboard failed because of the fan, and it isn't something you want to RMA for.

I will say this, I have added asus to my list of don't buy manufacturers. Their motherboards tend to kick the bucket way to easily. I don't know if it is the power in this area or what, but I have yet to see one make it past a few months. Their RMA department is also a pain and refused to pay for shipping when a monitor was dead within the week of receiving it.
 
Well, so far, I've gotten the Motherboard, PSU and Ram down to 2 choices, each.

Someone said there, I could wait for a GT300 Video Card but right now, a GTX 275 is still quite good and cheap.

While, they are good choices, I really hope it fits on my Case, otherwise, I would be annoyed to buy ANOTHER case.

I also wonder, who would want my old PC hardware?

I may give my friend, the 7900GS but he doesn't really like Nvidia cards.

Other than those, the spares are OCZ 4GB of PC3200 DDR1, Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 Single Core and Foxtron 500W PSU.

You should have gone with the 6GB, even if you couldn't use it all. Eventually you will probably go to a 64bit OS and you wouldn't need to buy more ram down the road.

Get a job and you can upgrade as often as you like :P I buy new parts every month or two to keep my desktop current.

i work 2 part time jobs and i havent upgrade in a while. still using my socket 939 dual core :)

I'm not sure where you got the HCS, but I have a i7 and use four sticks of RAM just fine. I have an eVGA motherboard that I would absolutely recommend if you can afford it, but the motherboard and proc are 250-300 each.
 
you may have 4 slots but the corei7 wants them in trips for triple channel ram for best performance. you CAN go off that but you take a sometimes significant perfomance hit. Where did i get that? Intel itself and many many reviews. When i make a recommendation it's not based on something i magically make up it's based on either personal experience or what the manufacturer recommends backed up by independent reviews..not review..reviews.

I'm not surprised but when I called my credit card support number, its worse than I though.

And currently, its not a lot...to get my newer PC, altogether.

I was hoping to get everything within a week but it looks like I can get them within a few months...:mad:

But now, I play; Brood War, Counter-Strike: Source, L4D, Fallout 3 and Street Fighter 4. And sometimes, Dark Messiah.

Unfortunately, 4 of those 6 games running slight minimum. And run worse On-line.

If 3 slots is preferable, any significant performance hits when using 6GB ram?

I know with Win XP, it would give me max of 3.5GB Ram. Would there be other problems running 6GB of Ram on Win XP? Or should I upgrade to Vista-64? OR wait till Win7-64?

Also, the Mobo will have only 4 slots, DDR3.

Should I just get the 2X2GB, to compensate the limited slots?

In the long run, 8GB DDR3 (4 slots; 2GB per slot) sounds better than 4GB DDR3 (4 slots; 1GB per slot).
