If we have an alliance of gamers, why dont we make a website similar to CGA and create christian and technical articles and pull from different people and possibly turn a profit? questions comments concerns?

Ok so i did more thinking and i for sure know we have alot of writers and savvy people here. I see the potential for a website that would produce, technical, current controversial topic columns, anti-porn, and Christian encouragement themed articles on a relatively regular basis.

the articles can be made from basically anyone on a freelance basis and could be an associated or subsidiary function of CGA and whatever advertising profits received would go to the support and upkeep of the website and then CGA.

I don't know about the profit idea, but it would be interesting to read articles of various subjects published by the community. I agree in that we seem to have an intellectual-intensive crowd.

profit would be from whatever advertising is there and available just like any other "article" type website.

I think its a great idea and one that will relieve some of the pressure donating creates.

A few thoughts in response:
  1. I like the idea. Creating an on-site list of articles by members of the CGA community could be beneficial in a number of ways.
  2. I likely would not write technical articles for the site. I manage a site where I am the sole author and I write a variety of articles, including technical guides. I have ads on the site in the hopes that I can at least recover the cost of monthly web hosting. So far, it hasn't worked.
  3. Instead of creating a spinoff site, we could host the content either on these forums or elsewhere on the CGA site. Creating a secondary site with a secondary domain means increasing our expenses. If the plan doesn't work out as hoped (and, to be frank, there's a good chance it won't; generating advertising revenue is far more difficult than it sounds), we'll have lost money instead of gained it.
  4. Our expenses aren't that intensive, considering the quality of service we receive and the number of active users on our forums. Raising roughly $550 a year should be a breeze for a community this large, even given the economic downturn. And I'm not saying that because I wish it to be so; we've managed to cover our expenses every time our bills come due--and that's with me as the de facto Fundraising Manager. If we had a person dedicated to bringing in donations for the Alliance's expenses, we'd likely have a nice budget surplus.
I'm certainly not shooting the idea down. I just wanted to counter with practical concerns.

And don't let my non-participation sway anyone. We have members in this community who are far, far more knowledgeable when it comes to technical things than me.

I like the idea, but I would recommend setting up a separate domain for the site. You can get a new domain for really cheap and we could set it up to host on the same server as the CGA just with a different domain. I think setting it up separately would be a better setup than as a part of the CGA itself.

Technical guides.... not so much, im thinking something along the lines of pc magazine type articles, not really guides. And basically, it would need a separate domain name but could hosted on the same server, thats not a biggy. And tek, i totally understand your thoughts on managing stuff solely. To be honest, if we setup an impressive looking wordpress or joomla type thing where rights can be given, then the writers can be the ones creating and managing the content.

That could work.

I'd need a staff member to handle the entire site and additional donations from the community to cover the domain expenses (which would total about $10-$15 a year).

I'm already juggling too many projects, so I'd have to have someone I could trust to manage the entire operation. I might be marginally involved for the initial set up (registering a domain, granting access where needed, helping configure the domain, etc.), but would need to hand it off in its entirety as soon as possible.

Well, Ima be free most of summer and im taking it easy by doing my last semester part time, if theres enough people willing to continually add content, i dont mind heading up the project. i will need someone who is more proficient in coding to help though. im pretty fail at websites in general

I suck at designing templates/layout/etc. I always get stuck on the designing part as I fidget with things to the point where I drive myself bonkers. Usually I get a nifty idea, do it, then get aggravated when IE breaks it and pukes into my eyeballs. Luckily I don't own a machine capable of running ie6 any more so I have an excuse to avoid supporting it any more, hehe.

For example I was working on something random, when I discovered that firefox, safari AND ie don't properly use the em/ex measurements on background images with different behavior for each. Which sucks, because now I will probably have to modify the output to insert an ugly tag to make things pretty for the cursor :\ After that I pretty much gave up for the time being until I get bored this weekend.

Well if we did a jooomla site for content management and more professional looking article/site, the adjustments would be pretty minor. though a wordpress site is even easier to adjust and manage and we could crosspost it with places like a blogspot for more traffic. if we outlined a site and got some volunteers, i think it could be pretty uber.
