Recommendations for 19" flat panel monitor?

After my eye exam earlier today, I'm pricing 19" flat panel monitors. There's a good chance I'll just stick with my notebook's built-in display, but I want to know what my options are if I go with an external monitor.

The purpose of the monitor is to keep the display farther from my eyes than my notebook currently sits.

Can anyone recommend a 19" (or right around 19") flat panel monitor?

Or if you are alright with the notebooks size you can...

Buy a keyboard and mouse and scoot the laptop back a little bit.
That's what I do for everyday stuff. I have a keyboard tray built in to my desk; I have an ergonomic keyboard and trackball on the tray. It works well for everyday stuff, but when it comes to gaming, it gets awkward.

For gaming, I use my Logitech MX518 instead of my trackball. Trouble is, the keyboard tray isn't wide enough for both my ergonomic keyboard, mouse, and mousepad. It's the only thing I don't like about my otherwise awesome desk.

I thought about buying a Belkin n52te or Nostromo SpeedPad n52. I could put the keyboard aside and use a n52te or n52 with my left hand and my MX518 with my right hand.

I don't think there's any ideal solution, but I'd like to come up with something that's healthy for both my eyes and wrists.

If you still want to get a monitor, a 19" seems a little small to me. I'd buy at least a 21".
The max size screen my desk can accommodate is a 19" screen. :(

Ditch the hutch (I am assuming this is whats holding you back...)!

Hutches < big monitors any day!

Also, I think you'd be wasting your money if you bought a 19" instead of the larger monitors since they are only a tab bit more expensive.

This is coming from a person with a 19" monitor... I have a Viewsonic 19" NON-widescreen LCD I bought when 19's were as big as they came (spent $450 on it too)... It is an awesome monitor and has helped me solidify my bias towards Viewsonic (my second Viewsonic monitor) and I still have no problems 3 years later... I just wish I had waited a little bit.

Unfortunately, if I pulled the hutch, I'd have to pull the shelves I've come to use and grow rather fond of.

I arranged my desk so my viewing angle is better and the screen is still approximately 36" from my eyes.

I also pulled the keyboard drawer from my wife's desk (that she rarely uses, and even then, she doesn't use the keyboard drawer) and laid it on top of my desk's keyboard drawer to play a Unreal Tournament 3 campaign mission today as a test. I rather liked the configuration.

what is your width you have to deal with. some 21" lcd are smaller in width size.

I'd look for at least a 1680x1080 screen pixel or higher. 1000 contrast or higher (these make it easy on the eyes) . ideal refresh rate would be the newer 120Hz .

The N52 is what i use. an excellent addition for any gamer.

ps.Odale has a good eye.

I've decided to put off buying an external display for the time being, but please feel free to continue discussing recommendations for flat panel monitors. I plan to re-read this thread when I can afford to buy a new monitor and I'm sure others could gain some wisdom from it as well.

the only time a 17 or 19" is worth it, is if you have two, but now days a 24" should be all you need
