Translation = DEATH!

Basically, if you get caught translating the Quran (even tho there isn't a direct law against it) you can get the death penalty in many Arabic countries. The bottom of the article also mentions those that convert to other religions (re: Christianity) are also murdered.

While I may not agree with what other religions have to say, or things that my government does, I'm thrilled that I have the freedom to worship my God without fear of being hunted down.

Part of the problem is that the Quran is very hard to read, even for those who speak Arabic fluently. So the Muslims who want to read it (and actually understand it) are unable to, and Shia law prohibits translating the Quran into any other language, or even into another form of Arabic or Semitic language.

Is it bad that I immediately knew that you were talking about the Quran when I saw the title?

Its a punishable act because it is considered by Islamic people to be the DIRCT word of God and is not considered as transcribed to people through an intermediary person, like our Bible. Some Islamic words may not have the same meaning in English, so their word of God is no longer the same.

Some Muslims believe the Quran is a part of God much like the Holy Spirit is to us.

And Muhammad was illiterate, so the Quran had to be written by another individual, who was not present when God appeared to Mohammad.

Well, the status Mohammad has within the Islamic world makes it so that the Quran is direct from God and not through a mortal.
