Taking Guild Wars with you

Does anyone know or have any experience about loading GW on one of the U3 flash drives? I'm going to be doing some traveling and will have access to a computer. I'd like taking GW without having to take my laptop.

I believe you can take the GW folder but you need to have admin perms as it tries to write something to the registry. If anything you can take the dat file with the game and dump it into any new install.

I've submitted the question to GW tech support. I'll pass along what they say.

The whole point of the U3 flash drive is that you don't have to load anything on another computer - it operates off the flash drive. Just plug it into a USB port and there is your desktop - email - internet bookmarks - whatever you have loaded - and it leaves the host computer completely unaltered and clean.

for that you would basically need portable apps (which GW is not) or you need to install an OS on your flash drive.

As mentioned earlier, if you don't want to do this, you could always just take the GW dat file so that you don't have to redownload all the game info.

Here is the response I got:

Hi Al,

It's not really supported but you should be able to just put the whole game folder on the flash drive and when you get to the system you want to play on just create a shortcut of the GuildWars.exe from the folder to the desktop.

Thank you.

So - it looks like it can work fine - I'll try it and see once the flash drive gets here.

If your flash drive is big enough, you can simply keep the DAT file on it and add that to a fresh install like Vibro said, and put the templates folder on there, too.

But the size is going to be the big issue...the DAT file can be HUGE.

Well, I was referring to if you wanted to bring GW with you, an 8g one is plenty to hold the entire game

I just returned from my trip back east. Bottom line - using the U3 flash drive was a success. All I had to put on my mother's computer was a shortcut to my GW.exe file on the flash and it ran just fine. Her video card was a dinosaur so I had to bring all the video options to a minimum. Other than that I had a lot of fun on the road.

It's nice to know I can take my game with me.

The other advantage with my U3 - when I am on my Vista machine it uses the 8gig flash as ram. That is a real power boost.

yeah, I use a portable hard drive to play on other computers (mainly my campus ones) all the time, GW works great.
