Good anime series this season?

I have cable which means all I have to pick from is what's on there or Adult Swim.
Cable Internet > cable TV.

American companies choose series based on how much profit they can earn from merchandise, not which series has the best animation, story, characters, and plot. While I enjoy Naruto, the series is largely designed to sell action figures and toys. The battles are drawn out over agonizingly long periods; often a duel will occupy 8-10 episodes, which is the better part of a full season.

I was surprised when Cartoon Network aired Samurai Champloo, as the series is one of the best in recent history, but the English dubbing made the series unwatchable for anyone who watched the original fansubs when they were released in 2004.

As a rule, Japanese voice acting always surpasses English voice acting, making subtitled anime more enjoyable than dubbed. Also, distribution companies select series that they believe will appeal to an American audience (high probability of selling merchandise, lower standard for animation quality, "dumbed-down" series that feed into the American stereotyping of cartoons as for children only).

If one is to truly explore anime--and not merely the "merchandise series" like Naruto and Pokemon that air on cable TV--then one should have (1) a high-speed Internet connection, (2) a good BitTorrent client like µTorrent, and (3) a bookmark for a site like AnimeSuki (which does not link to series that have been licensed by US distribution companies).

NOTE: If you want to play by the rules, then only download series that have not been licensed in the US. When a series is licensed, delete the episodes from your computer and, if you liked the series, purchase the anime from a local or online retailer.

Well, I'll just have to wait on that site, because my network has torrents blocked because "it eats too much bandwidth for the shared connection" which I can't stay connected to anyway. I would like to know how I am seriously hurting anyone's connection when the best I have EVER gotten from a torrent on this connection is 30kbps

Stargate SG-1 is over, season 3 of Stargate Atlantis has come to an end

Stargate isn't over yet and Season 3 of Atlantis hasn't ended yet. Stargate has always done split seasons. Both of the series pick back up on April 13th.

Also, although this is the final official season of Stargate SG-1, there are two movies planned. I have a feeling they'll be made for TV movies though. The good news is that Amanda Tapping (Major Carter) is going to be either a regular guest or major character on the next season of Atlantis.

When I first started my collection it was because to DBZ and I started by purchasing FLCL, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop... and with tek's help perhaps Welcome to the NHK!
Having finished Welcome to the NHK! last night, I would like to slap an emphatic disclaimer on my recommendation for the series:

Welcome to the NHK! should only be viewed by seasoned anime fans 17 and over. If you're a parent of children under 17, I would strongly suggest against letting them watch this series. Welcome to the NHK! takes a raw and sometimes painful look at a number of mature themes, including depression, addiction, misogyny, suicide, drug use (explicitly depicted in the manga, implied in the anime), sexuality, and mental disorders. The series also has a strong tendency toward nihilism. Welcome to the NHK! is essentially a Japanese take on the Theatre of the Absurd. If you struggle with depression, it would be best to avoid this series.

There is no "hero" in Welcome to the NHK! and all the main characters are seriously flawed. There is no simple answer. There is no "happy ending." There are only broken people, making bad decisions in a broken world.
Those not already familiar with anime and Japanese culture will likely have trouble understanding the nuances of the series. If you're under 17 or not already well versed in anime, I'd recommend sitting this one out and picking up the boxed set of Mai HiME, Read or Die TV, or Karin.

All that being said, the series is a brilliant take on human nature and social isolation. Great art often makes its audience uncomfortable, and Welcome to the NHK! excels in the uncomfortable.

nicely put tek... I hope everyone thinks strongly about it before just jumping into any anime series for similar reasons.

Mai HiME, Read or Die TV, or Karin.

I LOVE these. :) I think these are the only three I can say that about.

I have to add.... Though Tek says to consider these if you're not well-versed in anime, that does NOT mean these are cheesy or watered-down. DEFINITELY not watered down. Especially the first two.

And non-anime newbs could enjoy them too. ^^

ah....cheater!!! :p ;)

When it comes to watching dubbed anime, two rules exist:

1. All characters who were adult males in the Japanese versions will suddenly revert back to pre-pubescent high-pitched girlish voices in the English. Even if they are Jet from Cowboy Bebop.

2. All characters' personalities will be completely changed to the point that their dialogue will seem stilted and their actions illogical.

This is why, if I am going to watch a dub, I will find a high-quality fandub -- because the men will be men and the characters will be true to the original. These are very rare.

The only exceptions to these rules are those animes dubbed by Disney, of all people. Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, Steamboy et al. are all very well done and extremely enjoyable. All though that could just be because I like Patrick Stewart's scottish accent in Steamboy.

No way. Goku's voice is a dude! You're just jealous because your powersqueezes will never amount to even a fraction of the power of a ka-may-ha-may-ha.

Perhaps not, but I'm fairly certain he doesn't have the power to tank 5 gorrilas.

And it's originally Kami Hameha, although nowadays it's Kamehameha.
