Assuming you were interested in clicking an unobtrusive, non-flash, 468x60 banner on a website, which one would you click?

- A static banner, that stayed on the same site for a set amount of time (like a week)
- A rotating banner, where the ad is always different

I would click a rotating banner. I mean a banner that actually rotated on the page. That would be awesome. And maybe "Ridin' Spinnaz" could play when you moused over it.

Seriously though, I would be equally likely to click on either.

By rotating, do you mean different banners for the same entity, or a different selection of ads, from different entities?

There is honestly no way I would ever click on a banner. There's really NO way. At all. Whatsoever. I ignore static ones (as if they aren't there) and rotating ones just drive me insane with anger  therefore, no clickity click.

Where are these ads going?

its more fun to see a rotation of say 5-10 minutes. seeing the same ads all day is lame.
Roger.

Could be any of these things. By rotating, I mean not showing the same banner for a length of time.

I can't say where the ads will be placed, but probably not on the CGA forums, if that's what you're asking.

This research is for a personal project.

The more the ad looks like a part of the website (or article) the more likely people will look at them (even if only for a moment). If it stands out then people will tend to ignore it because they train themselves to.

The better (and most annoying) adds are wrapped within the start of an article so that it looks like part of the article.

I know some sites have static ads on the side and generated within the page itself. In general most people wont click adds unless they are looking for a product and they see a competitors ad :P Thats why writing reviews on a high pr site can have distinct advantages.

Just a thought. On a site that is completely or mostly static otherwise, a banner that changes will definitely draw attention from the viewer. I'mnot sure if it would be better to have a drastic change in the banner or a minor one. If you have a drastic one, it may really grab thier attention and get them to stare at the banner a while (if it changes quickly enough) if they are really bored.
But, I here's an idea: try making a banner that changes very subtly over a few seconds. The viewer will wonder if they really saw the change or not out of the corner of thier eye. Then they will study it closely to see how it changes and if they can catch the changes. Maybe have 5-10 different banners in a progression of changes. I think this would be the best bet to draw in a web-viewer to a potential site.

That's a pretty cool idea -- thanks! =)

Its possible, it would be a pain to implement tho

I've seen some adds that change every so many seconds. Are you saying it would be hard to encode it or hard to design the banner that would have that many small distinct changes?

Here's an idea along the same route, but a little different. Have a background, lets use a dense forest, and have something, like an animal pop out from behind one of the trees, then pop back a split second later.
I do not have much real web design knowledge, so I am not sure how often you can update or if this would even work. I also realize that it would not work as well on slower connections or computers. Still, wouldn't it be really cool if it did work?

the point of an ad is to have a link to the site, the problem is that the image may change (via animated gif) but the link wont, you would have to do some wacky javascript

Actually, it wouldn't be that hard. I'd say how I'd do it, but I also don't feel like giving away secrets for possible future products.
