XP MC Edition is teh suck!!1!1

So, after using XP Media Center Edition for 4 years now, I have realized how it just doesn't seem to work as well as regular XP, and still seems to be buggy...and this fact has been proven time and time again to me... I am sitting here starring at a regular XP install disc and code, and a Vista Home Premium disc and code...which should I install...lol...I will most likely go with the XP, just want everyones opinion...will be installing in 30-60mins... :)

I think it depends on RAM to me. If you have over 2g then I would go Vista, if less then XP. XP will perform better, but honestly I'm tired of looking at XP graphics and like the look of Vista a whole lot more.

Yeah, pretty much the only thing that got me to get Vista back out was how pretty it is...and I do run 4GBs of RAM...I think I might just got Vista again :) ...lets see how this goes...

I like vista well enough. XP was nice but despite vista's terrible reviews and release flaws I've yet to have any major or minor issues.

It really really pains me to see people advocating the use of Vista on this forum. :p

I'll put up with XP now due to its ease of acquisition, but the only Windows OS I'd recommend at this time is Win7.

Win 7 is for sure the bee-knees but in another thread Xion made it clear that he could not afford it now, so it's not a choice in this thread.

Vista with sp2 is really not "thaaaat" bad.

My advice: Install XP (Home or Pro, either are better than Vista) then install MediaPortal.

MediaPortal > Windows Media Center.

EDIT: And I speak from experience. I have Windows XP Pro and MediaPortal installed on my desktop computer and use that machine primarily as a media center PC (hooked up to my television via S-Video cable) and a torrent box (running uTorrent 2.0.2 for all that fansubbed unlicensed anime goodness).

TEK is mediaportal better than Boxee or XBMC? XBMC is super easy to setup, a non-techy could do it, and boxee sure looks awesome from a gui standpoint.

No idea. I haven't used Boxee or XBMC. I just use what works well on my ol' desktop.

Ahh well you should def check out boxee, its free and is pretty amazing. Both Mediaportal and Boxee are forks from XBMC if I understand right.

I'm going to stick with MediaPortal since it's working right now, but if it ever acts up, I'll keep Boxee and XBMC in mind.

UPDATE: Took 3 hours to get Vista on and running with most of my programs...and...instead of the old issues I was having in XP, and I have new dish of issues...for some reason I cannot get some things to install, and when I try to do it via admin, explorer crashes... Not only that, but randomly while browsing the internet, the computer locks up for 5-10 secs...never had that issue in XP...grrrrrrrrrr...

EDIT: I am going to try a few different things to try to get some stuff to work, but if it fails...time to start over...again...with XP :P

EDIT 2: The issues with Vista are piling up...time to go back to XP :(

Update: Back in XP without MC...which seems to make XP run 1 million times better without it...LOL... Things are much better now... :P

You said you had 4GB of RAM, are you running a 64-bit processor/OS because if you aren't your OS will read it improperly and it can cause a bunch of errors. (most likely because you will have some dedicated VRAM that will push it just above 4GB)

Also, I find Vista runs way better than XP, I don't really see why people had problems with it. Although the inability of programs(outside of actual installers) to put anything in important folders is annoying, as if you want to put anything in a folder you have to put it somewhere else and copy it manually. Although the issues you seemed to be having sound like they were RAM/processor related, my PC never hangs like that.

I am using a 64 bit CPU, but not a 64 bit OS, which shouldn't cause any issues...(and other than using linux I cannot afford an new OS now, or anytime soon) it is recognizing 3GBs of it, since it has to detect my video RAM as well... And actually when using 64 bit OS's in the past with my current hardware set up I had more errors than I just did with Vista... And I have NEVER seen Vista run better than XP...never... All benchmarks and personal tests showed it slower in almost all situations...some features do beat that of XP, but the performance lost is not worth it...

After switching over to plain old XP, without MC Edition, everything was fixed...no issues whatsoever... Which is what I figured would happen... XP MC Edition is known to be buggy and not patched well, since it actually has to have different patches and updates than the normal XP, and not many people are using XP MC Edition so it is not priority... And EVERYTIME I have had to install Vista on a machine it has been nothing but a headache... Both my inlaws and my brother have to use, or refuse to use anything else and I am their support guy :P ...Vista is a nightmare... :P

One of the biggest reason I dropped Vista like it was hot...lol...was because when I was having trouble install certain games/programs when searching the net for possible solutions...I was not alone...others were having issues get the same programs/games to install in Vista...yet XP and 7 handles them just fine... I wish I could afford 7... :(

Okay, I have been working on computers for 15 years...and this is beyond me...out of no where...I can move and deal with files just fine, even after everything was installed and the computer was all fresh off a restart...and then BOOM...all of a sudden I cannot move some files, .exe files won't respond, and loading up some folder contents locks up explorer.exe ...

These are some of the problems I was having in MC Edition that i thought were gone now...and I ALSO had these issues in Vista...I don't see how it could be hardware...the only thing to suspect would be the HDD and it is fine...and I had these same issues with my old HDD in MC Ed as well... I don't know what is going on, but it is making my computer unusable...been working on it for almost 9 hours and I am back to where I was... I have to go fix my sisters computer today so I don't have much time today to work on it...ugh... Any ideas on what is going wrong?

EDIT: The only thing that makes since is something I am installing is doing it, but it doesn't happen until an hour or two after install all my junk...and everything I install on my computer is reputable and trusted...

EDIT 2: Now everything is working fine again, did not restart...did not do anything but post again, and then went back and tried to copy the files again and it worked...but this has happened before.........and now it is stuck at 99%... -.-

EDIT 3: If all my programs would work in WINE, I would go fully Linux...I have never had this many issues in Linux... And it doesn't help my internet has been going in and out the last week...Comcast is freaking slow getting around to fixing things... Also...what was really weird...very weird...the last time I had the issue was only when the net was down...which doesn't make any since at all that those two would be connected...

The only error in the logs was: "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur."

If it's happening across all OS's then it is probably hardware related, or software that you happen to be installing on your PC every time.

Also, I never had any of the problems you described as being attributed to Vista, including the compatibility ones, at least none that I didn't also have with XP. And in my experience Vista definitely runs better.
