Where does a GW Newbie Go?

Salutations. I recently acquired a copy of Guild Wars Factions having already been a member of Toj for a few months. Now the process for joining Sprit of Elijah I understand (which I have not decided for or against yet) but I have not found the "Guild Wars Beginner Faq for SoE" if there is one. My questions are thus. 1. Is there any specific build that is best to start with or that is needed by the Spirit of Elijah guild? I have found sites for learning the basics ,however , I am curious as to SoE opinions and needs 2. More importantly which server should I start on? I thought SoE had a page for this but I cannot find it (probably right under my nose lol). 3. Any other newbie advice you may have would be welcome. I have not opened the GW box yet and will be doing research on the game a few days before I do. Please note I am limited to GW Factions for any build suggestions. Thank You and for gerbil speakers "SQWEAK"!

Welcome to the guild wars chapter!

To answer some of your questions:
1.Is there any specific build that is best to start with or that is needed by the Spirit of Elijah guild?

Nothing specific is needed, play whatever you think would be the most enjoyable.

2.More importantly which server should I start on?

Guild Wars is not set up into seperate servers like WoW is. Instead it is setup in regions(America, Europe, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc.). We play in the American region. The region is further broken down into districts in each town. The more people in a town, the more districts there are as each district can only hold so many players. You can change districts at any time so it's easy to meet up with friends when you need to. There are also International districts for each town that you can meet up with anyone on Guild Wars no matter what region they are in.

3. Any other newbie advice you may have would be welcome.
Just have fun and don't let any trashtalking from immature players get to you. If you need help with anything at all, you're welcome to whisper me in game. My Primary character's name is Michio Rai.

And Sqweak to you too?

Another couple notes:

Even as a player from the American Region in game, you can meet in International Districts with players from any other Region.

As Dauntless said, play whatever class you are most interested in. We have a lot of members and the game also has a NPC Henchmen feature that allows you to fill out a balanced team when needed.

With a new account you get 4 character slots. You can create roll playing or PvP only characters in each of these slots. Additional slots are available for purchase. If you add a new chapter to your account, you will get 2 more slots for each chapter. One word of advice. If you think you might be at all interested in PvP once you have had a chance to unlock a few things, remember to leave one of your slots open for a PvP only character that you can delete and re-build as needed. The advantage of the PvP slot is that that character will always be max level and have whatever armor and weapon type you select and use any upgrades and skills you have unlocked to your account.

I suppose I should explain unlocking too. Each time your character learns a new skill, it will be unlocked for your account. Using identification kits on dropped armor (dropped armor is never equipable, all armor must be obtained from collectors or armor merchants) or weapons that have an upgrade applied (always on drops with colored lettering) will also unlock those upgrades for your account. Unlocked skills and upgrades can be used on any new PvP character you create. There are a few basic templates available, even if you haven't unlocked the skills, but the more you unlock, the more options you will have.

My character names are below (2 accounts). When you log in, your friends list is default mapped to the "N" key. You only need to add one character name per account and the friends list will show your friend no matter what character they are logged in as.

Also our Website is http://www.toj.cc/gw just since that has not been covered :0). If you need anything my Characters Are in My sig! I have a Ranger still in the earlier stages of Faction so shoot me a line and we can try and group together! We also have a lot of fun using Teamspeak and helps everyone get to know each other and help do things in game much easier Highly Recommend it!

Yeah, don't be afraid to ask for help. I'm spread over two accounts, which I share with my husband. Again, always willing to help when I can.

And I just like to talk to people.

Warriors seem to always be a good character to start with. They have better armor than anyone else. There is less "thinking" to do with Warriors starting out. You can just "see the bad guy....hack on the bad guy".

There is always a need for Warriors in quest or mission groups.

Warriors in general make great farmers after you have advanced them sufficiently.

My character is Halonic Mjolner. See me for some nice weapons to start the game with. Always free to guildies.

Well, gerbil, in your case I'd suggest a steady supply of food and water, some wood shavings, and a modest habitat

J/k

Id recommend starting with a ele or ranger. Running a warrior can be very frustrating depending on your personality type :P

This is hilarious because my fantasy football teams have always been named the "Epileptic Gerbils".

On topic: Aside from in-game help, a couple of websites for you to check out as well:

www.guildwiki.org
www.guildwarsguru.com

Those two sites can answer pretty much any question about GW that you could ask, if someone isn't online for you to ask immediately.

Thanks All

Thanks for all the advice. Your responses were numerous, prompt and helpful :) It will still be a couple days before I crack the box open. I figure I better get some other stuff out of the way before I become a Guild Wars addict :p

Addict? Whatever do you mean? I'm no longer playing every day and I'm doing just fine.

Ignore the twitching. It comes and goes.

Monks and mesmers are wonderful characters, but I don't suggest starting with them. I, rather foolishly, began with a mesmer. I love my mes, but boy did I learn the hard way! Rangers can be nice, once you get some traps. But that takes a while.

If there is a class you really like, but you're intimidated by starting with it, you may see if it would make a good secondary.

Wait, you have factions? Ritualist/monks can be nice, too.

well for one, everyone is a newb cept for Anet, cause GW is consently updating so no one knows all the secrets of it. But C$ i have to disagree RANGERS FTW! a ranger is what i started with and i found it really easy to learn the basics of the game, i recommend the ranger or warrior as a first char. rangers over warrior. the only downfall is that rangers only have 3 energy regen, where as most others have 4 (cept war). so anyway all you need to do to get the basics is just do the starter island (which is you have to do anyway) and you basically learn all you can about the game, the other stuff will come in time. And again dont be afraid to PM us in game. we are here to help.
HF GL AND GOD BLESS!

Yeah, do the "Tutorial" part at the beginning. I did it when we got Factions, just to see if it's any good.

Also, read the "Tablets" that are all over the place in Shing Jea Monastery. Tons of useful info that, in Prophecies, you kinda have to figure out as you go along or pick up piecemeal.

Ugh, I hated the tutorial from the Nightfall BWE. But, I already know how to play. It was just too slow.

(I accidentally didn't press "skip the tutorial" :P)

But C$ i have to disagree RANGERS FTW! a ranger is what i started with and i found it really easy to learn the basics of the game,

Nah, eles are easy to learn, if you become an AoE nuker all you need to know is to aim for the center of a group
