Ok, well i was debating with myself because eventually i will have to switch to vista for gaming purposes due to direct x 10 and M$ being gay. Now i dont really plan on switching over to vista until i get a direct x 10 graphics card, however it gives me an excuse to use my free copy of vista home premium i get from my college and dual boot with xubuntu. My question is, is it worth it to try the 64-bit edition of it with 2gb of pc-3200 (hopefully i will get upgrade to 4gb eventually) on a socket 939 dual core 3800+ windsore core?

Note: Vibro is not allowed to blast vista, i need objective opinion on usefulness overall of the switch from xp to vista

I would stick to xp, <random junk about how vista is horrible>

I used vista for awhile just so I could look into how bad it really was... My vote is that anyone holds off as long as they can unless there is a distinct reason to switch.

Please do not use "gay" as a derogatory term on these forums.

10 days ago, I got my wifey a new laptop, an HP with 2gigs ram and Vista Home Premium. For the first 5 days or so, it worked fine. Bout day 6 it started suffering heat issues after being on for a few hours of steady use, which when it got warm, it would suddenly start responding poorly, even going so far as to only allow 3 tabs on IE to be open at any given time.

Now, today, I'm getting BSOD everytime I log into the account...

Seriously considering returning it to the store, and ordering a DELL laptop so that I can get a machine with XP on it.

My heating is pretty good even though i use a wooden case, i have 4 fans, heatsink fan, side window, psu and back outake, but that is something to consider if its that messy... and my distinct reason was direct x 10 :(

I got a laptop running Vista basic a few weeks ago.. no big problems yet. Only been using it to go online, though. It runs much better once UAC is disabled...

short answer? NO. there is zero benefit for your average user for 64 bit..coupled with Vista's hardware requirements i would wait until you build another box for vista. I have tried it here on a few machines and have always reverted bakc to xp due to slow performance, instability, software/hardware incompatibilities..etc etc.

alright, thanks for the info. i wont be building a main rig for least another year, most likely 2 so i guess that lines up with the end of xp support pretty well.

For home edition that is... XP Pro support will not drop off until 2017 because MS promised they would have support for Pro OS versions for 10 years after the release of a new version...(This started with XP...)

The problem I have with Vista is that it looks to be designed for idiots and people are eating it up... The ONLY reason I would ever touch Vista with a 1000 foot pole is for DirectX 10...

Most likey when XP Pro support goes bye bye I will either be going Mac or Linux because I am not all about that "so easy to use" crap...

i get it free through my school so it doesnt really matter. nice triple post btw xion ;)

I've been running 64bit linux, the only real improvement is in larger memory support and some applications [might] run faster, iirc programs only benefit if they have instructions that take lots of time where as smaller tasks are hindered by the larger instructions.

64bit windows is a joke, vista is supposed to improve things with a new driver architecture, but your lucky if you can get drivers at times... You have to make sure that all your hardware is fully supported by vista, which can be a pain at times because vendors sometimes rely on vista accepting old 2k/xp drivers and don't bother checking full compatibility.
