Victoria's Secret Commercial featuring music by...Switchfoot?!?

Has anyone seen the Victoria Secret's commercial advertising the free handbag with a 50 dollar purchase on Black Friday? Anyone recognize the music playing during the song? It's purely instrumental, but if you listen closely, it sounds suspiciously (as in it is) like Switchfoot's "Adding to the Noise" from their the Beautiful Letdown CD.

Now, to any of you who are familiar with the lyrical content of Switchfoot's "Adding to the Noise", this might strike you as odd. Here's a couple of excerpts from the song.

"Stepping out of those convenience stores,
what could want but more more more?"

"I don't know
what they're gonna think of next
genetic engineers of the most high tech.
A couple new ways
to fall in to debt."

The CD says all songs performed by Switchfoot, and "Adding to the Noise" was written by the Foreman brothers (Who comprise one half...or two fifths you could say now, of Switchfoot).

What I find so terribly striking about this is the fact that the song, at least it appears, speaks against the very thing it's featured in. Given the lyrical content of "Easier Than Love" from Switchfoot's latest release, Nothing is Sound, this is even more perplexing.

It doesn't matter if the song isn't played by Switchfoot, as long as the song was composed by Switchfoot, they'll receive royalties for the advertisement.

So I suppose that leaves two possibilities. Somebody picked out the song for the commercial, oblivious to the song's content, and no one has told Switchfoot yet.

The other possibility, perhaps more disturbing, is that Switchfoot is keenly aware of this (which to me, seems probable, given the fact that the band is extremely image conscious), and allowed VC to use the song anyway. As much as I'd love to tell my cynical self that I'm delirious, it may appear that Switchfoot has turned into a shallow and hypocritical product of society, selling out to that almighty dollar they claim to have such a disdain for.

Whats this? A band is making more money than they used to? SELL OUTS! Just messing with you. I think it's great that VS has a song of theirs in one of their commercials, and if it was them who said ok, here's a song you can use, then it's even more funny because they picked a song that speaks against that kind of thing. I say go Switchfoot! More power to you for sticking it to the man without them even knowing it.

i always change the channel when victoria secrets ad's are on.... but thats kinda sad

I'm probably wrong, but doesn't it go like this?
The label owns all rights to the music, so the way I think it works is VS goes to their label and they give them switchfoots song for X amount of dollars.

P.S. I heard switchfoot wears VS underwear, but that's just a rumor. teehee.

I believe you are correct, apocalypse. An example of this is that Fiona Apple recorded a new record a few years ago, but Sony owned it and kept it locked up for over two years without releasing it. When a band signs on the dotted line they may get a portion of anything related to their music, but Sony owns the rights to sell out their music to whomever they wish. The only thing Sony is required to do is to pay a portion to the band, but they don't have to ask permission.

(This is just an example with Sony as the record label... by no means a jab at them. ;) )

That's how it works alright. Craddle of Filth (don't listen to em) left Sony after the BMG merger because of an album ready for release that wouldn't have been allowed. HIM; a lovemetal Finnish band had a right to the "Heartogram", but when they signed rights to Universal; Universal inturn sold it to Bam Borgera skate boarder proffesional posser who pimped it out and has given HIM a bad name. As for switchfoot, whose on the Sony music label. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony sold their music to a porno company to make another EQ2 video....

How is making money from something you claim to disdain "sticking it to the man?" If Switchfoot was so sincere about what they were singing, they certainly could've made things hard on their record label for acting against them, it happens all the time.

This one is confusing, and the plausible explanations aren't pretty.

I usually make a conscious decision to not watch the Victoria Secret commercials. Honestly, I hardly ever see commercials anymore thanks to my Tivo! :D

Same here. I fast forward through most of them anyway (unless it's the cool new iPod commercial). =)

Meh, what's the big deal? Maybe the band got a little change from doing something hypocritical, or maybe not? Do you still like their music? If so, listen to it! If not, don't.
