Has anyone seen the Victoria Secret's commercial advertising the free handbag with a 50 dollar purchase on Black Friday? Anyone recognize the music playing during the song? It's purely instrumental, but if you listen closely, it sounds suspiciously (as in it is) like Switchfoot's "Adding to the Noise" from their the Beautiful Letdown CD.
Now, to any of you who are familiar with the lyrical content of Switchfoot's "Adding to the Noise", this might strike you as odd. Here's a couple of excerpts from the song.
"Stepping out of those convenience stores,
what could want but more more more?"
"I don't know
what they're gonna think of next
genetic engineers of the most high tech.
A couple new ways
to fall in to debt."
The CD says all songs performed by Switchfoot, and "Adding to the Noise" was written by the Foreman brothers (Who comprise one half...or two fifths you could say now, of Switchfoot).
What I find so terribly striking about this is the fact that the song, at least it appears, speaks against the very thing it's featured in. Given the lyrical content of "Easier Than Love" from Switchfoot's latest release, Nothing is Sound, this is even more perplexing.
It doesn't matter if the song isn't played by Switchfoot, as long as the song was composed by Switchfoot, they'll receive royalties for the advertisement.
So I suppose that leaves two possibilities. Somebody picked out the song for the commercial, oblivious to the song's content, and no one has told Switchfoot yet.
The other possibility, perhaps more disturbing, is that Switchfoot is keenly aware of this (which to me, seems probable, given the fact that the band is extremely image conscious), and allowed VC to use the song anyway. As much as I'd love to tell my cynical self that I'm delirious, it may appear that Switchfoot has turned into a shallow and hypocritical product of society, selling out to that almighty dollar they claim to have such a disdain for.
