if anyone is getting a 60-second warning, and then at the end of it getting a reboot, view this (it's a memo my ISP sent to all customers)

THIS THING CLICK ME

ok.  and if you're getting the 60 second reboot, you can abort the shutdown!

Start>Run
shutdown -a

FIXER TOOL!

My mum got this on her PC. If its crashing too much to download the patch then do this...

Go to my control panel. Then goto Administrative tools.

Open up services. Find the one called "Remote Procedure Call".

Got to the third tab along and there are three option boxes. Set them all to "no action" (where they were previously on "reboot"). This stops it rebooting but doesnt fix the problem. It should give you enough time to grab the patch though.

its a long process to fix it and i need to give you a patch to block the port.

What this is, its a Virus. An Internet Worm to be exact. it lives through a program called msblast.exe my firewalls detected this thing trying to access the internet and to spread to meh sister's computer. I've blocked it, and it started harrasing my computer. You must destroy this file, and Apply the patch so you can block the port where it comes through.

If you formatted your computer, you must apply the patch ASAP. I recommend using other links besides Microsoft's webiste becuase it had infected the Microsoft's website.

More information/helps contact me. If you let this happen, theres a possibility it'll totally ruin ur computer

I got it the same morning the worldwide alert went out.... the first virus I have ever had ... in about 10 years of computing .... Luckily , as with Flash, my firewall stopped it going to other pc's (mines a laptop) on the comp nw .... so i could then quite easily fix the reg entry and del the bugger...... i never got reboots though .... funny ....maybe there's different versions ?

my RPC is still set to "take no action" ....

Heh, I'm glad I patched the heck out of My PC the beginning of this month, earlier I was running on a patch-less computer because the patcher was having problems. Aparently keeping ones computer up to date is a bit of a hassel for some lazy computer users.

I always update when theres one available.. I didnt see anything of the worm.. Makes you wonder though if loads of companies got hit.. they must be such n00bs.

The problem with companies are (and I'm a corporate software dev) is that they typically dont update their systems that regularly especially the big ones with very specific software systems since in the past there has been a number of cases when upgrades killed server boxes and such...so they install firewalls and have the most up to date AV as they can , and only update when really necessary, and mostly its after the horse has bolted ;) since controlled rollouts take a long time, and users are typically not trusted to do it themselves, or do not even have administrator rights on their machines ...

my company got hit, had to work a little today to tell infected people to stay off the network until Monday
