Unreal Championship 2

Not sure if any of you have been following the new UC game, but I've been paying particular attention to it, mainly 'cuz of the unique style of play, combining a FPS with third person melee combat, or more accurately, a FPS with a fighting game.

Check some of the videos on the site, they're mind blowing. The game looks like it's aimed squarely at the hardcore, movement tricks galore, total twitch and shoot kind of thing with no time for slower newbies. At least that's what I get from what I see and hear. And Raiden (of Mortal Kombat fame) will be a playable character, thanks to Epic moving to Midway!

Any one else following it?

I don't know... I have Unreal Championship (the first one) for Xbox, but it always just seemed like watered-down UT. Sorry, but Halo 2 is pretty much reserved a spot in my disc tray for months to come. That is, of course, when I'm not playing UT, which is not a large percentage of my leisure time.

UC2 has enough unique additions that it might be worthwhile. I'll give it a rent before I buy it.

UC2 looks pretty interesting, but it doesn't look like it'll have that classic UT2004 feel. Either way, if I had an xbox I'd sure be checking it out.

re: classic UT feel....no, not at all, it's a completely new game. If the melee combat and third person perspective weren't enough, the weapon scheme has been changed (you choose an energy weapon, an explosive weapon, plus your character/race-based melee weapon, that's it), "finishing moves" have been added, there's target locking (it attempts to keep the enemy in your screen while you do the fine tuning; melee combat locks on completely so you can concentrate on pulling off combos, blocking and parrying rather than having to aim ie. pseudo 2D-style fighting), race and character specific special moves and combos, 40+ (all new, no ports!) maps and two new game modes in addition to DM, TDM, CTF and Survival: Overdose (like Bombing Run, but in a FFA mode, 3 goals with varying difficulties/distances which score you points accordingly, and a ball that gives you powerups the longer you can hold on it) and Nali Slaughter (sorta like invasion, but instead of deadly monsters you're trying to wipe out as many peace-loving Nali as possible).

The weapons have also been altered a little. You've got the standards from the series but they've all been freaked out a little. The RL for example will fire single rockets, a block of 3 rockets or 6 weaker "drunken" rockets for carpet bombing. You can use the shock rifle to set up shock traps: shoot out a shock ball, hit another button to stop the ball in mid air, and then fire another one (or five). If they're close enough together, detonating one will detonate all of them. And the bio rifle blobs now last longer and will actually chase after opponents a little before evaporating (sorta like the prox mines in Chaos UT).

So yea, this game will not feel like UT at all, and it's completely different than the port of UT2003 they did for Unreal Championship 1. It really does look like the game is shaping up to become more fighter than shooter or perhaps a fighter with shooter elements? I don't know, it's something in between.

I just wish they were going to put it out on the PC! :P

I, personally, would consider purchasing this game...if it were to be released for the PC. Unfortunately, this will only be released on the XBox. After playing Halo 2 on those ridiculously cumbersome controllers, I can honestly estimate that I will never enjoy a XBox FPS using the standard controllers.

This is all very unfortunate, because UC2 sounds like exactly the type of game I'd love. Those who have played Half-Life (1, not 2) deathmatch with me know of my fanatical love for crowbar kills. Even the loathesome CS can be fun if players agree to limit combat to knives. And who can help but break into raucous laughter when one knifes a skulk in NS? A game that fine-tunes the melee combat element sounds like a ton o' fun. Unfortunately, the XBox controller, awkward as it is, ruins the game experience.

Still, I'd be willing to pay the rental fee if three other friends wanted to try it out. I have a longstanding interest in Epic's work dating back to Epic Pinball, so I wish them the very best with this and all their projects. I just can't help but be a little disappointed after playing Halo 2 and wanting to throw that monstrosity of a controller out a window.

Tek, were you using the old XBox controllers or the 'Type S' controllers? The 'S' controller is much much smaller and feels 200% better than the originally, monstrous controllers.

Yeah, you need a Controller S (Controller Slim?).

My brother and father prefer using the old ones, which I have dubbed Controller F, as in Controller Fatty. They're uncomfortable and the placement of the white and black buttons alone is enough to make me throw it through my TV. So, Controller Slim, no broken TV. Win-win.

Heh. I'll pass the recommendation along to my best friend who owns the XBox. Since I don't own one myself, I don't have too much pull. ^^;;
