Time commitment...

Hi guys,

Just curious, what would say the time commitment is for playing Guild Wars? How long would a good, average session be, and how many sessions per week?

I'm really intrigued by the game, and certainly by the social aspects of playing with other ToJers, but I've never beat an RPG in my life (somewhere beyond hour 12 I start to lose interest) and MMORPGs (even pseudo MMORPGs like GW) always have this "time sink" warning flag jumping at me whenever I look at them. Is it possible to "casually" play GW? Or does the game (and being in a guild) necessitate a more dedicated time commitment?

Thanks!
Shagz

This, in my opinion, is the only MMO game that you can play casually as you mentioned. I don't do that, but I know of quite a few people who do. It can be as long or short as you want it to be and with no monthly fee it's definitely worth trying.

I've put in about 100 hours on my main character, and I've been done with the storyline for about 30 of those. When you figure that the typical console RPG is between 40-60 hours, it's pretty much along those lines.

As far as time commitment, that's why I made the switch from another MMORPG to GW. I had put in over 500 hours on FFXI, and was not even half of the way to max level, had lousy equipment, and was headed for a period of 50-100 hours of just farming to get the money for the equipment I needed.

You can sit down with GW for 45 minutes and accomplish stuff. The coolest part is that once you've visited an area, you can go back at anytime simply by clicking on the icon on your world map. That cuts down on needless time wasted immensely.

A'ight...I'll have a read through the online manual and see if I should pick it up. There's a sale on at Future shop right now, $20 off the regular price, so thought I might take advantage of that. Thanks! I'm thinking Monk-Ranger, but we'll see...

Just outta curiosity, do people generally play "in character" or do they just play the game as is?

I can't speak for everyone but I think most of us tend to think of our characters as children or slaves that we take care of and they do our bidding. As opposed to the character being "us" or an "alter ego". We don't roleplay in guild speak. Since you can create max-level PvP only chars on the fly for PvP and GvG and 4 char spots, everyone has lots of alternate chars they are always playing.

I think each of us has a "main" char that we play, and we usually refer to each other by that name even when on an alternate char. (all your characters in GW share a common bank, and all will be in the guild when one is inivited)

I know that a few of us guys play female characters as well, It's not that we are cross dressers in real life (well at least I am not, I don't know about Mr. Slice ..j/k) but its just not a roleplaying heavy game, it is set up more for instant action, strategy, and retooling your characters for the specific need.

$20 off is pretty good deal. I have seem some great deals on eBay for the account key only. Since the client is a free download, the account key is all you really need.

for me i have bout 30 hours or so, and that only consists of like .....4 actual "sessions" of like 1-4 hours the rest is just casual gaming

Im getting the game over ebay but im paying 35 for a game :X im praying somebody out bids me
i 4 hours left think there is a chance ?

Well, I'm in. Picked it up today and just ran through my first few missions as a Monk, and even partied with someone to get that Signet Ring (the resurrection spell) and attempt the "Beyond the Wall" mission (which we were ill-equipped for).

Anyways, cool stuff! Now I just have to read the manual, figure out what all these artifacts are for, etc.

Looking forward to seeing some of you online!

PS - Haven't figured out what my second profession is going to be ....recommendations?

First question: Healing Ankhs, Fire Artifacts, Storm Artifacts....these things all say +3 Energy. Do they actually do anything beyond give you energy? Like, does the Healing Ankh regenerate health or enhance healing prayers/spells, etc.?

They only do what they say they do. Other than that, they just look different. Items drop sometimes with special stats, like a flame artifcat can drop with a stat the gives a percent chance to increase your skill recharge, while a healing ankh could drop with something that helps a monk-specific skill.

Can't remember my name at the moment <blush>, Soduko-something, I'll post back here tonight this evening when I get home...

Thanks for the info on the artifacts, I was kind confused, the differences between these things being only cosmetic as far as I could tell...

EDIT: Character name is "Suko Soduk"

i'll add u to my x-fire maybe we can do some pre-sear questing

The price is ridiculously low for a game that offers what Guild Wars does. Guild Wars is the best game value that exists, in my opinion. Free updates and content with no monthly fee? It's more than worth it. :)

plorp

Hmmm.... I don't know. Maybe ebay. I just don't want to spend $40... WELL then again I spend that in 8 months paying for a RuneScape subscription. $5 a month for the extra stuff. Hmmm... How to convince my mom that it would be worth it... well most of the time the discussion ends with "it's your money" so... yeah.
