I actually signed up last weekend and its interesting.

With the CD-Keys that I put on my B.net account, I can download the games on-line if I ever lost my game CD's/DVD's, which is useful.

You can also merge your WoW accounts.

I created an account last night and added my Starcraft, Warcraft III, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne CD keys.

It looks like Blizzard is wanting to be a little more like Valve (allowing customers to re-download game clients).

I lost track of how many people over the years told me they would install Starcraft again if they could just find their lost CD. Now, as long as they have their CD key, they have no excuse!
