Proverbs 14:4, HCSBWhere there are no oxen, the feeding trough is empty,
but an abundant harvest comes
through the strength of an ox.
"Empty" in this verse can also be translated as "clean." In keeping with the theme of last Sunday's VotD, this verse emphasizes that work worth doing is often messy.
Yes, you have the option of keeping things clean and empty, but toward what end? While it's important not to mix our metaphors (holiness and purity still being essential goals in the Christian life), we should read in Scripture a strong preference for putting our hands, minds, and hearts to work for the Lord over waiting until all elements fall into place and the mood strikes us.
This could easily segue into the topic of New Year's resolutions, but the wisdom of this proverb applies year-round. Still, now seems as good a time as any to say: Happy New Year, fellow believers!
