Popular UT2004 mods

Can anyone recommend a mod for me to snag and play? I've been itchin' to find a new favorite game and figure the UT2004 mod community will give me my best chance of finding something I like (and won't have to pay money for ^^).

Hands down, the most realistic FPS out right now is Red Orchestra. Forget all those pansy, semi-realistic, Counter-Strike-wanna-be WWII shooters. This one is real. If you can't do it in real life, you can't do it in the game. Forget about having crosshairs or shooting while running; the point is to make it as realistic as possible.

If you like Counter Strike, and you probably do, check out Frag Ops, which takes the CS formula to the UT engine with a focus on making it fun while retaining at least some semblance of realism.

But why play a mod when the standard game is so perfect?

Deathball is fun, but I don't like it online a whole lot. If you ever go to a LAN, play Deathball, it's the ideal LAN game. Alien Swarm is cool too.

Heh. I can't stand Counter-Strike. I was "raised" on games like Doom, Quake 2, and TeamFortress Classic. Having to wait more than five seconds to respawn makes me itch. Still, I recognize it's the most popular game among Tribe of Judah members. I just have to take my doses of CS in five-minute increments--longer if I have my Gameboy Advance on hand to play Mario vs. Donkey Kong between rounds.

Realism isn't really my style. I seem to favor the "sleeper" hits like SiN, Shogo M.A.D., and Natural Selection. Still, I downloaded the 700MB install, so I might as well give it a shot. Maybe I'll learn to love it. ^^

Aye, I agree, the standard game rocks. I've got much love for UT deathmatch and Onslaught.

BEGIN RANT

Still, I think I'm having a fit of finickiness (is that a word?) common to most gamers. I'm bored with the World War II games, the Counter-Strike clones, and even the flag-grabbing mods. Most Natural Selection matches on ns_ maps nowadays turn into whinefests ("Can I call you a WHAAAmbulance, Commander?") and Combat has reduced the intricate gameplay and class balance of NS to a "me alien, me bite" and "me marine, me shoot" formula.

Maybe I need to play real-time strategy games for a season. But it's seven years later and I'm still waiting for someone to top Starcraft.

I can't afford MMORPGs, neither the time nor the money, so those are right out.

I love puzzle games, but they don't offer the same level of social interaction, immersion, and adrenaline as FPS games.

That doesn't leave much else.

END RANT

So, I'll try Red Orchestra and Frag Ops and give Alien Swarm another chance (I liked it, but the learning curve is a bit steep). Keep those suggestions comin'! ^^

Air Buccaneers is fun, but I haven't tried it online yet. You need a team of 3 guys in each balloon (one to steer and fire the hot air, one to shoot the cannon, one to run defense by shooting down other people's canon shots) and maybe a 4th on defense/raiding party.

I've got a few other picks, but I'm at a conference right now, and the links are at home so I'll come back 'n post tonight. Problem is, too many great mods don't have enough support from users to make a community and get people playing 'em, or simply, there's just too many mods for people to focus on. (Checkmate is an excellent mod that comes to mind, totally underrated IMO; there are just no servers, and the bots play dumb when you do single player)

re: fickiness...I know what you mean, hence my current infatuation with 2D space shooters and indie/freeware games. I dunno, I think I'm starting to get tired of FPS games in general (but I'll keep playing UT2004!!!)...at the same time, I'm hypocritically looking forward to the single player campaign in Pariah, so just ignore me. :P

Hey, if you like freeware games check out www.gamehippo.com. I'm obsessed with freeware games. I don't think you'll find many mods with a good online community sadly, but here are a couple more to check out, they're good for a laugh.
Clone Bandits (I just love the moscowboy)
ChaosUT
Ninja Rope mutator (not sure where I found this)

re: Tek's Rant

You could always play standard RPGs (such as NWN or DungeonSeige) They often come with mp capabilities, and there's not that annoying monthly fee involved in mmorpg's.

In fact my biggest complaint about KoTOR (I & II) is its lack of multiplayer. I mean would it have been so hard for them to do multiplayer

It actually might have been hard for them to put multiplayer in KotOR 1 and 2 because they're ports from xbox. But man would that have been awesome. Multiplayer and moddability would make those games last forever.
