occult?

I have been playing GW factions for 3 days and I really like it but I am feeling uneasy about all the spells etc. How do you all feel about it?
thanks :)

id recommend playing a monk, if you have quick reflexes you can be helping people like christians should. rangers and elementalist would be my second pick, both easy classes to play and nothing dealing with death or curses. Warrior and assasins are too popular.

I personally have no problem with it. I don't see, and don't feel, any real connection between the game world and the real one.

but, my faith isn't your faith; you should walk by what convictions you have and how you feel God is leading you.

God has made each of us unique. I would say that if you are feeling convicted by the Holy Spirit about playing GW, then you shouldn't play. However, as occult symbols in entertainment isn't specifically addressed in the Bible, I think that Christians should be tolerant of the beliefs of other Christians in the matter and not be dogmatic.

This unofficial opinion has been brought to you by the number 3 and the letter R.

I agree that convictions about things like this are very personal. I'm not uncomfortable with the content in the game, but your results may vary. I've left games in the past that I thought crossed the line, though.

There are definitely classes in the game that have less focus on spells and such, as already mentioned, and those may make you less uncomfortable.

Sesame Street FTW!!!

On-topic:
Playing this game is no different than reading The Lord of the Rings from a Christian standpoint. It is a fictional story in a fantasy setting. As long as you don't accept any of it as 'real' and act upon it, I don't see a problem.

I'm usually very leary of anything with the occult (I have family members with a history of occult dabbling), but I feel okay about it in Guild Wars because it is so distanced from reality.

Is there something in particular that bothers you? Is it just particular classes, or the use of spells at all? If it's just particular classes, you have to consider if you would feel comfortable playing other classes or if their presence would still disturb you.

Regardless, you have to make your choice according to your conscious.

Excellent advice.

Also - to be honest, one doesn't really have to play through the Canthan storyline to get one's money's worth out of Factions. If the spiritism in the storyline bothers you, I don't think you'd be missing out too much if you decided just to dump it.

I think what bothers me are the spells. I play monk because I like being medic in BF2 and I like to help ppl. I feel 'medic' is crutial to the team. These are healing, protection 'prayers'.. prayers to...?? . I am secondary ranger which has less spells (but seems a bit boring too lol)
Of course, some could say playing BF2 is pretending to kill people, but I think that's a bit far fetched.
In my walk with the Lord, I have gotten caught up in different legalisms so I don't just shut something out anymore if I feel uneasy until I KNOW it's the Lord telling me.
I heard some players saying that 90% of the female characters in GW are really guys (and I know some that do this). That seems very strange to me but I would like to hear why this is done.
I don't think I could ever play neo since it deals with the undead etc (besides, they look like they are having seizures :D l)

What is the age range in your group/guild? Mostly teenagers?
I am really enjoying the graphics and music in GW :)

I am 26 and the Majority of my characters are female why? Well they are like my team I do not role play that would just be weird. Some are female because I do not like the male versions like the male ele. Other than thatto be honest I guess some where created because I would rather stare at a female for hours than a guy. Although now I have been creating male characters alot more lately. It is just nice to have different characters all the time. Having all male or female to me would just be kinda boring.

Ok, that makes sense for a guy to want to stare at the female character lol.
I had to play a male on BF2 but I would rather have had female if they had one. Of course then I might have heard more of ' you're a gurrrlll?????" I didn't see more than a handful of female BF2 players but I am sure there are more.

I am monk, but I might try warrior too later and I want her to be a great woman warrior! :D My name ingame is Valkyrie which is a scandinavian woman warrior.

I'm 29...gah..did I just admit that? anyways, I have characters of both sexes as well, and it's just a matter of random choice for me. During the character creation, I just play around with different choices until I find a selection that i like.

Quick guys, get that lid back on the can of worms! Hurry, they're getting out!

Hehe. But seriously, we have a thread on the forums dedicated to that subject here:

http://www.cgalliance.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13605

If you're willing to wade through all the off-topic wanderings therein, you'll find a lot of comments regarding "gender switching". If I may sum up my own feeling in the matter: Because GW is not a heavy-roleplaying game, the vast majority of players do not directly identify with (aka put themselves in the shoes of) their characters. Because of this, gender switching in GW usually means absolutely nothing and also symbolizes nothing. (In the above mentioned thread, I quote a very interesting academic article on the issue of gender switching, which I'd recommend for you to read.)

Now if I may be so bold - from you comments Dixi, it sounds to me like you ARE one of those people who directly identifies with characters you play. In other words, you put yourself in their shoes and whenever they do anything, you imagine yourself doing it. If that is the case, then you must be more careful than most of the rest of us regarding what games you play.

What is the age range in your group/guild? Mostly teenagers?

Mostly, but our guild has a surprisingly large college-age and older population.

Haha! My uberthread will get new life! Yay!

The "Playing Female Characters" thread has turned into the "Women and Gaming" thread (and had several tangents, and been held hostage for cookies...), but the first few pages really are an exploration of the original topic.

As for age, we run the gamut from one member's ten-year-old son, to several fourteen-year-olds all the way to a couple of fifty-plus guys. I'm thirty-three, and I really am female; Dorkelf is my husband.

And I think I'll revive the introductions thread, whatever it was called.

I read most of the thread and I guess I can see where yall are coming from now.
As far as my 'getting into the role' Battlefield 2 is a first person shooter so you are looking out of their eyes and not at the character. That is the only type game I have played until now.

Admit it guys, the real truth is.. you know women rule and are the greatest and this is the only way you can experience it :D
(j/k)

lol I actually in a FPS will only play a guy. Dorkelf aka Paul hit the nail on the head i do not identify with my GW characters thus I can play a woman. And you gals rule lol.

This demographic is all the more apparent in the forums I think; it seems, in general, the college-age+ crew is more vocal and in larger numbers on the forums than the teenage/high school crew.

Going off-topic...

For some reason the WoW and Guild Wars chapters then to skew older, where as the other chapters skew younger. Not *totally* sure about the reasons for that, perhaps because other games (certainly FPSs) requires a certain amount of dedicated free time to get good at, while MMORPG have longer play time and social interaction than you typical FPS.

On the occult:
I agree that if you are feeling conviction from the Holy Spirit about playing Guild Wars then it's not for you.

On age:
When I joined here back in late February I was suprised at the number of older players in the guild. It was quite comforting actually, since I myself am 27.

On males playing female characters:
I'm a male, I have two male characters and two females. I don't roleplay with any of them. My wife designed my primary character who is female, and I recently just created my second female character to keep my characters gender balanced, as in 2 female, 2 male. (you can laugh, but I'm not kidding!).

And before I forget... Welcome to the forums!!!

well, to stimulate the schitzophrenic nature of this thread, and many others...

age is 20. reason why I play female classes? they look more fitting for some classes. my melee are typically male and my ranged are typically female. that and the caster males just seem.. wussy.

Well, we ARE the civilizing force in society...
and guys are the savage force of society, preventing the world from falling into a state of complacency and eternal mary-kay parties.
a world without guys will suck, namely and soley for the reason that I won't be there.
