New MMO for Chadley

Hey all, so it's advise time. Here's the deal: Under normal circumstances, my gaming time is far too sporadic to warrent spending $15 for a monthly fee to play an MMO. That's why Guild Wars has been perfect for me for so long. (Hi SoE)

However... lately, I've been having a harder and harder time finding things I'd like to do with my GW character, and I've also been granted a large sum of extra time during my week which would be enough (at least on a month to month basis) to make that $15 worth it. So now all that's left is choosing the MMO... anybody?

Just so you know: I've yet to be really sold on WoW; though, I'm sure 8 mil can't be playing a bad game. I absolutely LOVE every concept of EVE, but there's a HUGE learning curve, and it's hard to know what to do as a n00b. And there are some games that seem real interesting, but I haven't looked into them much at all (ie LoTRO). Oh and my computer's not the best. I tried the Tabula Rasa beta, and it wouldn't work at all.

Thanks for your help!

You mean there are other MMOs worth playing aside from GW, WoW, and EVE?

On a more serious note, I heard that City of Heroes/City of Villains was pretty decent.

Wait for Warhammer Online and play Team Fortress 2 in the meantime?

I have a whole lotta love for Mythic, as they developed Dark Age of Camelot (which I played during beta and six months after release). DAoC's PvP element makes WoW's PvP look like kindergarten recess tag by comparison. If Warhammer Online features anything comparable--and if PvP is your thing--then it'll be the MMO to pick up come release time.

HI CHADLEY!!

oh and how about GW 2??

sure its about a year down the road.. ok fine..
Star Wars Galaxies maybe?? I've heard its good and horrible.. maybe more people can say.

Yeah, I'm looking for one I can start playing like, umm... today. Which is why Warhammer and GW2 are out. I might not get to play consistently for more than a few months. SWG was my first MMO, and I loved it. Until they changed everything for the worse. *sigh*

It's really between EVE and WoW unless some other game gets thrown into the mix. WoW because of the player base (and some cool CGA guilds :p) and EVE because it's everything I love; although I have no one to play with...

Counter Strike, it's not a game, it's a way of life.

CS has a GREAT concept, but HORRIBLE implementation. Guns are supposed to shoot where they are aimed. In CS, they never do. If you shoot a guy and he's moving, you're guaranteed not to hit him.

With your new time that you're planning to spend on gaming, why not take up a productive hobby? Write a book. Learn an instrument. Compose music. Draw. Paint. Learn how to make games. Make a model of something. Redesign your kitchen. Build a car. Learn to cook. Volunteer somewhere.

I took up creative writing, and I've found that I greatly enjoy it. It takes up most of my free time, and I'm thankful I set aside the games for it (at least some of my gaming time ;)).

I have only played 1 hour of CS:S this week. And with velocity you have to aim ahead of the target in order to hit it (in CS:S the bullets are actually treated like Rays and are near instantaneous).

GW is not an MMO...It is a multiplayer online game...MMO=Massively Multiplayer, which means playing in a group of usually 25-100 players as group, and I have never seen anything like that in GW...

On another note, Warhammer Online is looking great...and WoW is fun...I would suggest either WoW, LotRO (Lord of the Rings Online), or Warhammer Online...

Chandely,

I would highly suggest you contact Ewoksrule.

He has played or researched every major MMO on the market currently.

He can ask you a few questions and give you the best recommendation.

I will ping him about this thread today, as well.

FYI- Warhammer Release is now October 15th.

If you think you love many things about EVE then you should totally give it a shot. All games come with a learning curve and the only way to get around it is to find a friend/make a friend that will give you time and attention to learn the ropes. I started up EQ2 most recently and within a few days found a recruiter in a guild that was very friendly and liked to help people. I ended up leveling to 60 with the guy almost exclusively as he was the top quester on the server (over 6000 quests completed) and loved to lead others through quests.

Anyways my point is play the game that you think you will love the most and then find someone to help you learn. There are always ppl like that around. As for EVE I know that we have a small chapter here in ToJ and that the leader is super helpful in the past. I would contact him and see if he can give you some noob starting tips.

If you want to PM I can give you some advice on MMOs, as Icthus said I have played a lot of the top ones and leveled to max in a few as well, so I have an idea of beginning to end game.

And of course if you happen to pick EQ2 I will hook you up with all the bags/gold/advice you want. =-)

lol GW not an MMO in WoW most of the time you are solo right? In GW you are almost always in a group of at least 8. There are missions that have 16 players. PvP with 24 players. In cities your with hundreds of people. Is it like a normal MMO no but it is an MMO none the less.

MMO simply means Massive Multiplayer Online.

I believe this means 2,000+ on the same "world" at the same time.

Unlike say Team Fortress 2 with 30 per server or so.

Thanks for all your help guys!

I reinstalled EVE earlier and tried it out since they completely overhauled the graphics (which are beautiful btw...). Sadly, I'm pretty sure my computer would explode if I ran the game for more than 10 minutes. :( However, a new laptop is in the works for the near future. Anyway, now I'm downloading WoW's 10-day free trial to see if it works any better. From past experience, I think it runs just fine.

So who knows, I'll just see what happens.
