Need Virus Avoidance Help

I need to download maps to test them for adding to our server but every time I go to fpsbanana I get problems. Allow me to be more specific. A while back I went there and got pop ups for a dating site that showed explicit nudity. I didn't get them on any other site only fpsbanana. They eventually stopped for what reason IDK.

Now yesterday I go there and I get a couple of those sham virus alert pop ups. Firstly pop ups are set to be blocked and I am using firefox. I closed one of the pop ups using right click/close but then thought better of it and killed firefox under task manager (IDK if it matters because in my short career using Microsoft visual C++ it seems possible you could switch the close dialog box call to something else.) Then because it was suspicious I run AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes. Malware bytes finds...

C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Local Settings\Temp\pgYWduCR.exe.part (Rogue.Installer) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Local Settings\Temp\OqYBEOF3.exe.part (Rogue.Installer) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Googling Rogue.Installer it tells me it's malware that tries to get you to download or install bad stuff which is what the pop ups wanted. So I think this is how those pop ups got called. Now I can't determine for certain whether it's fpsbanana or something else but it seems like it would be fpsbanana as I have no problems like this while surfing other sites. A Google of "virus fpsbanana" shows some people have commented on similar problems but there seems just as many who say they've had no problems from the site at all :/ ??? I've now run Ad Aware, Spybot, Malwarebytes scans and they all show clean. For protection I use firefox, windows firewall and Spyware Blaster as well as the aforementioned programs. Problem is I still need to go to fpsbanana to download maps. The maps themselves have always scanned clean so I am not worried there. Bottom line how can I go to this site safely and why can others go to the site without problems?

One question: do you use the AdBlockPlus and NoScript addons on your firefox? NoScript alone should allow you to filter out most malware/viruses, and AdBlockPlus helps you avoid ads.

Exactly what I was going to say, I use both, but if you are using NoScript, AdBlock is not needed...

I can Attest to CS's Recomendation about Avast, been using it for a few years now with no Problems, Some sites have those auto router popups[mostly Porn Ads] but Avast cleared those away as well and it's FREE and uses Very Little Resource :)

I'd recommend using the OpenDNS DNS servers to help protect your machine. You'll still want a solid anti-virus program and the Firefox plugins Neirai suggested (NoScript and Adblock Plus), but every piece helps.

I installed no-script and went back to fpsbanana. After surfing it for a long while I ran a malware scan which turned up nothing. So hopefully it did the trick, either that or their site admin finally caught whatever it was. Thanks Neirai! :)

I've been curious about Avast for a while now but I am not sure it would help or not this instance. What I got from fpsbanana was technically malware and not a virus. If it's like Avg it has stopped all viruses in the past but is oblivious to malware and rootkits. Though I have had very few incidents of those (like 2-3 times in all my computing). The one major infection I did have was a rootkit which downloaded itself through Internet Explorer via adobe acrobat (which is why I now use Firefox). Avg could only detect the viruses the rootkit tried to download then not the rootkit itself. In honesty I'm probably to lazy to switch to Avast right now as fpsbanana appears to be working with the addition of no-script. I'll keep it in mind and probably try it out eventually though. (Figures a pirate would use a program called Avast :p)

Btw anyone know if I should be concerned about the possibility of Firefox calling Adobe Acrobat? Should no-script stop that or does Firefox not do that anyway?

Do you know if OpenDns is easy to uninstall? I share my internet/network with my father so if I do test it and I want it easy to undo if it messes up something.

Download the Firefox add-on PDF Download.

There's no installation involved. You create an account on OpenDNS, configure your settings how you want them, pull up your router's web control panel, enter the OpenDNS DNS server addresses in the Static DNS fields, configure your router to automatically tell OpenDNS when your IP address changes (if on a dynamic WAN IP), and reboot your router.

Now all the categories you told OpenDNS to block should be blocked.

I can understand Why you use the OpenDNS, but I run 2 PC's online at the same time thru my Router, no fuss, just make sure only one person has access to change the Router Settings as needed, If your Father messes up his Internet on His Pc after that it will not effect yours. AVG just finished offering a Free 10 year license for thier Anti Virus which also included Root Kits, but AVG is a Resource Hog, although the Home Version [Free 1 year license ,free annual renewal ] does not, it scans for them and so far has stopped every Malware/Trojan and Daily Flu attacks Prior to Damage, The Professional edition has it all[But you pay for the license], Just a tip :p
