Microsoft and mac files...and other little things

WHY CAN'T MICROSOFT PUT UP WITH THEM SO I CAN ATLEAST SWAP FILES FROM SCHOOL TO HOME? The crazy thing is, i can take microsoft stuff to the mac, but that helps me very little because we use mac and thats what the indistry uses when it comes down to graphic design. Ir really is a killer, because i did some cool things that i would like on your opinion on. I can't seem to get thumbnails or pictures up either. So the lack of pictures (that i have bragged about) can't seem to up load. Any ideas/thoughts/help?

Graphics design: Save files as PNG w/ alpha transparency, you can also use the .psd format which can be opened in gimp.

Web images: I <3 PNG but the alpha transparency is horribly screwed up in IE6. You can use GIF index transparency but it is only designed for 1 color in the background. JPEGs are fairly nice but are really lossy by default on some editors such that 2 or 3 saves later the image is totally unusable.

Documents: I love Lyx for writing, it does all that annoying formatting for you via the latex standard, as such you dont spend all day pressing the enter key to make things look proper (and copying stuff to and fro in the headers and footers, gahhh!). OpenOffice works decently for reading word docs but some formatting can be screwed up a little.

I use a combination of OSX, Linux and winblows at home. For the most part I prefer the following:

OSX: Graphics design and video editing
Linux: Web Design and programming, audio recording and editing
Winblows: isn't even installed no more, muhahahahha!

It sounds like the problem is that you are trying to read psd files on winblows and it doesnt know how to read them. Download the gimp and it should solve most of your issues.

Exactly what problem are you having?

I take graphics files from the PC to the Mac and the Mac to the PC all the time. (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat...)

Yup, it is really all about avoiding proprietary formats supplied by microsoft to uhh, "improve" your life with lock in and lack of third party support.

Have you considered saving a copy of the files as a JPEG or PNG (I recommend PNG) and just uploading those? You would, of course, want to keep your working files in the native format.

I hate windows but unfortunately its the only choice for computer gaming. For everything else mac osx and linux beat windows out of the ball park. Bill Gates was a genius at selling a subpar operating system and getting it to be pretty much a monopoly on the market.

...DUDE. What distro and program did you use to get that going?

Its like the only reason I even spend time on XP.

I use Ubuntu with wine.

Check out that form. It has a script that you can run to install wine and config guild wars for it. However, there are still a number of small issues you will have to work out. After the script it run take a look at the last 4 or so pages. There they describe how to get around a lot of the issues. I got it working but it took some work. I still have a small issue with it not using all of the Bandwidth it could but otherwise it seems to work fine.
