Metal Gear Online Beta starts TOMORROW

For all who are interested: the beta for MGO will be starting tomorrow (I'm really not sure what time though) unless you live in Europe, then It's been active since Wednesday.

If you plan on getting MGS4 when it's released, just preorder the game at GameStop and you will get the Metal Gear Saga Volume 2 DVD with an insert that has a beta key on it. (Call ahead of time though, supplies are limited). It will be running through May 5, 2008.

Currently, I am (unsuccessfully) trying to (1) update game versions...already...and it's not even connecting to the server and the P2P update is a joke atm and (2) get my Konami ID registered...again...a joke, their servers have been constantly POUNDED since Wednesday (seeing how Europe is playing NOW)

Anyway, end of rant.

Long story short for those of you with a PS3: $5 will get you access to the beta if you're interested. I for one look forward to using the "man-a-pult" to fling myself into the side of a building. yes.

Metal...Gear...Online...

LIFE JUST GOT BETTER!!! THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER!!! Maybe, I will have to check in to is first...

Aaaaaand it's canceled...errr delayed

Metal Gear Online

Konami said:
...we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused.

Edit: If you happen to live in Japan, you're safe from the delay. Apparently the beta being open in Europe caused a massive overload (what, you mean people WANT to play a highly anticipated beta?)

They're going to be annouced a new date to go live tomorrow (4/22) and it's been extended to end on 5/11 instead of 5/6

Yep...here we are on what was supposed to be opening day. But, it's been delayed.
I found out if you create a Japan or European PSN ID you can download the beta without preordering the game. That's how I downloaded it. And also, like you said, the "Update" takes several hours to download. The Konami servers must have been just bombarded with hits. I had tried 3 days in a row to get my Konami ID (which annoys me in the first place that I have to get one). I finally was able to get through their website yesterday and create my ID's, but I had to try SEVERAL different names for the game ID. Maybe I just have bad luck.
So yeah, I hope the game is worth all the demand and hype. I've never played a Metal Gear game before, but the game videos look cool.

You might end up getting booted once it does roll around, they're doing some serious cracking down on the EU and Japan keys being used outside their particular territory. If you're able to get in though, let me know and I'll send you my ID info once I figure out how it's actually going to be implemented.

Edit: Starting again @ 2400 April 25th. Which is when all of my stuff will be boxed up and shipping out for the move. Boo. They're canceling the open beta in Europe to save on server load, which sounds good to me, since I actually gave the money for beta access. :P to the EU

You better hope (or pray) Metal Gear Online will last.

Resident Evil Online lasted for 2 years...:(

I don't really think it will, I just think it will be cool to play the beta. At least it's included with MGS4, I just don't care enough for multiplayer games to pay full price for an online only game.

It just being on PS3 will be it's downfall, console things never last...if they would make a PC version it would help it a little...but I doubt they would...This is the reason I stay away from consoles...I do not like spending $400 on something I will be replacing in 5 years...that I cannot upgrade or use for anything but playing games...doesn't make much sense, like Blu-Ray...

I can respect your opinion, and I do. But I also respectfully somewhat disagree.

Console systems prior to the xbox360 and PS3 were just as you say, about only good for playing game and will no doubt be outdated in about 4 to 5 years.
But this generation of consule systems, or at least the PS3, is good for more than just games, although that remains it's primary purpose. PS3's now come standard with hard drives, and wi-fi capabilities. I can browse the internet(I check the forums often from my couch) ,download game demo's and videos with my PS3. I can also plug in my USB flash drive and store music, photos, and movies/video on the hard drive. Then there's the Blu-ray player part which is also nice. The PS3 costs about the same as a blu-ray player but can do so much more than be just a disk player. PS3's support friends lists and voice chat. You can connect either wired or wireless headsets via bluetooth.

Computers, just like consule systems get outdated fast. But you will spend a lot more for a computer than a consule system.

I think the main advantage of playing games on a PC is simply, that you will have a keyboard and mouse. That is why you will never play World of Warcraft or other blizzard games on a consule system.

To be fair, I play UT3 with a keyboard and mouse on my PS3. Too bad 360 is getting splitscreen, but I guess Epic, with all their current shady practices, needs something to make it sell since it won't have user mods.

Edit: And also, saying that you just out and out won't play console games is fair enough, if that's your thing, but it's also going to cause you to miss out on a lot of great games.

The current generation of consoles (at least PS3 does anyway) have these so called 10 year plans, which means they're just going to keep improving. It's also unfair to say online for consoles doesn't work, when you see the popularity of Live.

Believe me, I used to be a PC elitist, but when it comes down to it, PC is becoming more niche as time passes, and with consoles getting beefier and capable of PC quality experiences, they're getting more of developers dollars.

P.S. - Epic, give me split screen, seriously, or I will hate you for all time, with your mod stealing, user banning, thread deleting tomfoolery.

However, I can upgrade my PC for years, you cannot upgrade a PS3, and my computer's specs blows the specs of the PS3 out of the water, plus PC games look so much better than any console game on any system...and I think, IMO, that Blu-Ray is the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen...one, I do not like HD TV...I think it is a waste of money...two, if I had $400 sitting around to buy a DVD player with, I would have to be rich...and three, $30 a DVD, that is ridiculous...come on, what about us that cannot make over $10/hr and have a family... Unfortunately I will HAVE to buy one to play MSG4...but gaming on a computer creates a universal game environment, unlike consoles, if I have a Wii, and you have a PS3, we cannot play with each other...so no thanks...

So MGO has been live since pretty early in the day, I guess 2400 April 25 meant Japan time, so as soon as I shower and find my PS3 in the mess of boxes in here, I'll be on. At least some good has come out of my moving truck being 2 days late.

Edit: So it's pretty cool. The team deathmatch is straightforward enough for me, but I was a bit too worn out for the checkpoint capturing modes. More on the game later today for any who're interested. I still feel kinda nervous that SOCOM Confrontation might kill it off, MGS is kinda niche anyway, a huge series, but niche enough since it really isn't for everyone.

As soon as I meet the requirements (5 hours in-game, Level 2) I will start a clan for the few of us who have access. It should be easier to cross paths that way. Although, someone might beat me to those requirements seeing as how I am packing out of here and driving to Columbus Sunday night, and moving into my new place Monday.
