Intent to Play

I've been reading a lot of reviews lately and I think that EVE Online might be for me. I'm a casual gamer. Some nights I'll play three hours, others none. I like to make my own way, not power-level and try to be the first to accomplish something. I want options, choices... I want to experience a world completely and carve my own little piece of it out instead of being just another Night Elf druid. Heck, after watching Firefly, I don't even want a battleship. Just a couple guns and a fast ship with plenty of cargo holds. :)

Anyway, as I said, I'm a casual gamer. Married with kids and not always at the computer. I also go out to sea for weeks at a time since I'm in the Navy. From what I understand, though, my wife could relatively easily keep my avatar learning skills so that when I came back I'd be stronger, faster, better.

Is there much of a ToJ presence in EVE Online? As a newbie I'd expect to have to do a lot on my own and that's okay, but it's also nice to sometimes have an escort when you first venture into a big game world. Just feeling out opinions and such of what you think and how you enjoy this game, before I make my final decision.

I played the trail but didn't feel like it was the right thing for me, it was an awesome game but I don't have the time right now :(

Hello mate. If you don't like power leveling, then EVE is definitely the game to play.....cause You can't power level. You advance you character by training skills, which all take time no matter what you do. Basically there's absolutely no way you could start a character and in a week fly battleships.

EVE can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. You can run missions here and there, go out on a mining expedition, become a day trader in the market system, build ships and modules, get into a galactic war between massive corporations with hundreds of ships on either side....or sit quietly cloaked and watch......and that's just the beginning.

To advance I mentioned that you have to train skills. EVEmon is a that helps. You can setup a skill plan and it will remind you when you need to login to train the next skill. The thing to remember about EVE and skills is to ALWAYS have a skill training. Even if that means stopping skill (A) in the middle of training and starting skill (B) because skill (A) will finish at 4am. Then switch back in the morning.

Also, there are not any 'professions' in EVE. You can be what ever you want or fly any ship you want as long as you have the skills to do so....you just train them if you don't. The character creation where you pick you pick your race and starting attributes is more of a head start down one particular path. It by no means binds you into something like...a night elf will always be a night elf...no matter how much they aspire to be an ork.

Right now there's not really any ToJ presence. If we get more people to play then that will change. There are several active Christians online. You can find them in the "Christian Public Access" channel in the game. Between there and here, you can find help with most aspects of the game.

If you decide to play, run through the tutorial and let me know when you're gonna be on. I'll sow ya the ropes

So, can I be training skills while I'm AFK? Like if I am at work and leave my computer on or overnight, etc? If so, it seems like that wouldn't be too hard or take too long at all.

What "professions" or jobs can your slide into? I know there is mining, and of course weapons-related stuff. But how would I know what skills to train in order to plan out ahead of time before I even create my character?

I'm looking forward to learning more while I'm out at sea for three more weeks. I'm also reading some of the links to EVE's main site that you posted in other threads. I'd prefer to work in some sort of trade/smuggling area.

OH YEAH! That's my biggest draw to EVE. You don't have to play to advance. No grinding for hours to gain levels. Once a skill is set to train, it trains. It doesn't matter if you're not logged on, or even if your account is active. So...Yes and No. Yes you can be AFK, NO you're computer doesn't have to be on.

For professions.....It's pretty open ended. You have big areas, and then tons of smaller ones. You could be a jack of all trades, or speacialise in something. and there are literally a million possiblities.

For begingers though, you're pretty much either stuck as a fighter, or small time miner. You just don't have the skills or the isk (in game money) to do some of the speacialties. After a little while of playing, you can get into bigger ships and start hauling things for trade, mine more, or fight bigger things.
EVEmon can give you some idea as to what to plan. You can look at all the ships and modules, and it will automatically load the skills you need into a plan for you.

Heres an example: Smuggler/Hauler

You'll want to train up transportships. There advacnced haulers. They can carry big loads, and have the ability to get past blockages by using ECM and jammers.

At the same time you'll want hull upgrades that make your ship faaster, and more agile.
You'll want to be able to use ECM, so add those skills.

Depending on the ship you fly, you'll want either shield skills, or armor skills.

AND then...
You're gonna wanna add in the learning skills which allow you to train things faster.

I know that's all pretty vague. I haven't mentioned any specific skills. But that's where EVEmon comes in. For ship fittings and what a ship can fit, QuickFit. It's a java app that has all the ships and fittings and will let you play around with what 'fits' on a ship.

It's getting late, I'll have more tomorrow..

Smuggler/Hauler or Big-time Miner (as in working my way up to owning my own Mining Corp or something) are going to be the professions I'd like to pursue. Basically, nothing military. Thanks for all the info you've given already and I look forward to learning more!

Alrighty....

Mining.

You got Three major parts to mining: Mining, Hauling, and Refining.

Mining you can do in just about any ship. A mining barge is your best bet for ming as they can fit "strip miners". Which are really big mining lasers that can cut asteroids in no time. They take a while to learn, but are more than worth it if you plan to career in mining....it's pretty much a MUST.

Now, when you're out in asteroid belts, you may run into 'Rats' which are NPC pirates. You're not going to have any way of defending yourself if you're in a barge....you have no weapons.......except....

Drones! Depending on where you mine (later in this post) You'll want either light scout drones or medium drones. Basically they are little robots that orbit your ship and will attack things that come to bother you.

SO...once you start mining, you gotta take it some place....

Hauling Although barges are pretty big and can hold a lot, nothing has the capacity of a hauler. You'll need one to move all the ore you mine from the belt to a station. And then possible to another station. Depending on the station, or where the station is, you might more ore a few times.

Refining The sort to refining is that it's the process of taking raw ore and turning it into minerals that can be used to build things. there are a couple of skills that let you refine better...they're call..."refining efficiency"...yes yes.....creative genius at work here...anyway... Those skill plus your "standings" will allow you refine better with little or no waste. Once the miners are refined they can sold at a higher price than the ore itself, or used to make things.

Ok...now for some definitions and explanations......

Security Status: EVE is a tough place.....and VERY tough place. It would be total Anarchy if not for Concord. They're the 'cops' of the galaxy and are pretty strict about messing with people. So strict that if you even so much as you a target painter to 'light up'...well...anything, you'll realize you've made a BIG mistake in about 3 seconds when you find you no longer have a ship. Now, EVE has over 5,000 systems that you can visit....far more then what Concord can police. So, every system has a security rating. They range from 1.0 to 0.0, 1.0 being the most secure, and 0.0 being ...well....lawless. You can shoot or be shot at by anyone in 0.0 without concord setting in and it it there that PvP is the best. Anything from 0.4 to 0.1 is considered lowsec. In lowsec you are only safe when you're around a gate, or a station...and even then you still have to be careful.
As a general rule, the lower the sec status, the better mining and better NPC rats, but the great the danger of losing your ship.

Mining what? In EVE there are two things to mine. Asteroids, and Ice. There are different kinds of 'riods' which yield different kinds of minerals when refined. Some minerals ofcourse are worth much more and are much more rare.
Minerals are used to make things from ships to modules to space stations. EVE's economy is player driven and almost everything you can buy on the market is made and sold by players. So minerals are always in demand.

ICE? Yes, ice. Ice contains isotopes which are used to fuel Player Owned Station, and BIG ships like Dreadnoughts, Carriers, and Titans. They are so big they cannot use the warp gates, and must create Jump portals for themselves. Stations need fuel to operate defenses and modules. A POS can be place anywhere in 0.3 space and below, and are useful as safe havens from pirates, or storage/refining for low sec mining operations.

Standings In EVE there are player corps, and NPC corps. NPC corps have agents that will give you missions to run. They range from moving goods from system to system to shooting hostile NPCs. All agent missions give you 'Faction' toward that agent's corp. (along with isk, loot, and other rewards). Faction increases your standing with that corporation and thus allows you better access to their resources (refining, maintenance, and manufacturing arrays). That's where efficiency and lower cost come in.

Now, the thing to remember is that behind the major skills, there are a bunch of 'support' skills that let you do things better. Like fly your ship, or use bigger drones, or better mining lasers, or mine more in less time.....

Crew on this for a bit, and ask questions. Also, have you thought of what race you want to play?

OH!....and before I forget....just so it doesn't get left out later.....

First rule in EVE:"Never fly a ship you can't afford to lose!"
