Hows FFXIV?

anyone in game can tell me how its like? Not sure if I should dump all my moneys on it yet. Does it take FOREVER to reach level cap, or is the grind comparable to WoW?

The ToJ guild can give you actual play experience, but the forums are lit up with people unhappy saying it has been way rushed and not very polished.

The same was said about WAR, APB (rightfully), Global Agenda, and any number of MMO launches known to man.

As for rushed though, the Pre-Order early start wasn't actually the FULL game, just a small fraction of it (since the rest is locked.) As for polished, it's hecka polished to me, even with the normal launch bugs that come from MMOs.

/still needs to open his copy up after homework

Yeah I have very little value to add as I have not played it. I agree with Keero that every MMO has haters. I have just been reading a bit in the forums and could not help notice the large amount of people saying this was not ready for launch and many sloppy elements on different levels. Personally I hope they can get it up to par fast as I know we have a lot of excited ToJers playing and I wish the best for them :) That alone (playing with brothers and sisters) can make all the difference regardless of how the game turns out.

and WAR was rightfully so as well. ;)

Hmm...let's see if I can turn off the biased recruiting...errrrrr.....ahhh.....GRRR....BAH!...HA!

/bias off

The main subject complaints I hear about the game are as follows:

  • The controls
  • User friendly-ness
  • Content
  • Ready for release
  • Surplus EXP

Now...let me address each of these from an unbiased standpoint...

The controls: Do they suck? Most people (90%) will say, YES! I say no...mainly because really the controls aren't different than any other MMORPG out there...so once they fixed the mouse lag, the argument of the controls sucking has no ground to stand on...

User friendly-ness: Is there any? Honestly...no...the game is not very user friendly, and if you all have ever played in the MMO department is WoW...you probably shouldn't play this game... If you like a challenge, and figuring out stuff on your own, and making your own path through stuff...then play this game...this allows for lots of freedom and customization... (I might explain that later)...

Content: Is there a lack of content? No...there isn't...even without the retail patch, there is a lot to do, and much fun to be had... People just think all there is to do are Leves, and once they complete them (roughly 2-4 hours every 36 hours) they have nothing to do, WRONG! After leves there are hourly events called Behests that can benefit you and your friends and give you at least 15 mins for additional fun every hour... Also, craft and gathering is not just for leves, there is much to do with both outside of leves and many benefits to reap for doing so... Not only that, but just last week SE mentioned a list of stuff that would release at launch, and most of that list isn't in the game, but remember, launch date is the 30th...not the 22nd...we CE buyers are pretty much just playing an extended open beta where are characters and data are saved...

Ready for release: Is this game ready for release...very much so... Is it polished? Yes...more than WoW was in vanilla IMO... Currently the servers are having major congestion issues...but that is about all the problems I have encountered...

Surplus EXP: Now are you telling me...wait what...err...what is Surplus EXP? I am glad you asked, watch this 5 minute video... And to my knowledge no one I know personally has come anywhere near close to the surplus EXP cap...not only that...but you would pretty much have to play this game like a 2nd job to reach it...

I think that about covers it...

/bias on

That was VERY hard for me...very hard...enjoy! :)

I'm going to reply as a "WoW Noob" who has only played WoW (and Maple Story if you can count that).

The controls: The biggest complaint I have about the controls is that they are not very intuitive. You cannot just pick up the controller and know how to play right away. Having said that, the controls do not take that long to get used to, especially if you have someone helping you out. Once you get used to the controls it is not that hard to use.

User friendly-ness: Just what I mentioned above really. In the age of software development today it should have a lot more things that are easier to use, such as an easy way to see if someone sends you a party/linkshell invite or such. But nothing you cannot get used to.

Content: I see no lack of content. Running out of leves to do sucks, but there is the main story line and local leves (which are for your crafting classes) can keep you busy for a really long time. Plus you can always explore the world and see what you find. The game does seem to have a lot of content.

Ready for release: I don't want to compare the game to any other game at release, just base this on information that Square-Enix released. In my opinion the game is *mostly* ready for release, but not entirely. Why do I say that? Because there is a lot of features of the game that we are told "it's in the works" or "wait for a later patch". Things such as finding items the retainers are selling, for example. This should be a standard feature and ready to go when the game is released. And I don't buy the "the game is not released until the 30th" excuse. It was released when they put it on sale, on the 22nd, when I could go and buy the retail version of the game, install the official game client, and login to the official (not beta) servers (sorry Sean :P). But other than that the game is pretty much ready to go, I can quest, travel around, and level up, I just cannot buy items from other people or effectively sell items right now. A few more weeks and they could have had a lot more ready. Overall I would say it looks about 90% completed, so not too bad.

Surplus EXP: I have not heard of this being an issue at all, so if you were worrying about it, don't.

The one thing that wasn't mentioned in the original post that I really dislike, is the patching system. It really really really sucks! But, the game is still a lot of fun, and I will still be putting hours into it and enjoy every bit of the game, as long as I do not have to patch very often. :)

Anyway, I hope this did not discourage anybody from playing the game. If you are looking for a fun MMO then FFXIV is it. Just know that it is not perfect and has a few flaws, but most of them can be worked through or is just a bit of a learning curve.

Does it take FOREVER to reach level cap, or is the grind comparable to WoW?

I haven't had time to reach level cap yet, so I can't tell you that. :D I can say that I reached level 12 (Rank conj: 8, culinary: 8, weaving: 7, botony: 4) with no more than 30 minutes to 2 hours per day in the past 5 days. If you are looking for a fun MMO and are willing to go through the slight learning curve, buy FFXIV. :)

The only question I have is, is this the Final Final Fantasy yet?

The only thing that will ever get me to even consider playing another FF game is if the first two things out of anyone's mouth is This title has gone back to the series roots and They fired the art team. [although considering its MMOness, XIV's art might not be as outlandishly horrific as the last few titles]

Heh...the name Final Fantasy was chosen...for no other reason...than to give the game the acronym FF... :p

Art outlandishly horrific?...that is pure opinion sir...I love the art in the FF games...ALL of them... I honestly see repetition in the art styles in all the FF games... :P ...but I guess we all see things differently...

And I don't buy the "the game is not released until the 30th" excuse.

Heh...you can not buy that "excuse" all you want, but that is straight from SE's mouth... :P ...and just like in the past in most MMORPG head starts, they are before the release, not at release... Just because you can go out and buy the game, which they have said countless times does not release until the 30th, does not mean you are playing the retail version of the game...however...if there is no big retail patch on the 30th...the game is and will be still very good...

Using the mouse and keyboard, the controls are no different than WoW... :p So, how are they not intuitive? I know many use a controller, but with the fix of the mouse lag... ... ...as stated above... :p

That is the one I see alot. People are saying the way you place things on the hotbar and have to manually swap hotbars is very cumbersome and sloppy. It feels like it was designed to use with a controller and not optimized for keyboards. Of course the UI and mouse lag made it much worse so I am glad they sorted that out.

You talking 8-bit roots? 8-bit MMO would rock. >.> EVE should be 8-bit. Gogo alliance battles! :p

Holy crap. That's probably the most awesome MMO idea ever. 1300 person 8-Bit fleet fights? The market's all text/spreadsheet anyway, so nobody'd know the diff in that regard, and mining would conjure feeling of Asteroids.

MMO+ 8-Bit Space Ships = GENIUS I SAY. GENIUS.

thanks for the experience guys, looks like not the game for me then, if it is GRIND HEAVY. That lalafell smiling at me and saying I could be yours is just so IRRESISTABLE though, so watcha think?

I'm currently playing Eve fulltime, so for secondary game its a choice between WoW cataclysm, or FFXIV. Looking for something that doesn't require a lot of time investment where I can just play for 1 month near 10 horus a day and hit level cap (during the end o year hols) and then just take it casual from there. Sounds like WoW in a nutshell for the non competitive player.

For what you have said, I think FFXIV would NOT be the game for you... FFXIV is not about hitting the level cap asap...it is more about the journey... They plan on and are making it difficult for people who want to rush to the level caps...also...they don't want people playing anymore more than 2-3 hours a day...they straight up said "If you want to play this like a second job (6-8 hours a day), this game is not for you..." They want people to play, but not become addicted...SE actually cares about us...LOL...but seriously...in Japan online game addiction is a big problem (just like it is here), and SE is doing something about it, without removing the fun... Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abE09-tqhoM (a 5 minute video on how SE is "putting a spin" on the "time sink") There is a place for the hardcore gamer...but just as the video says, everyone moves up at the same pace, but hardcore players get to more horizontally as much as they want...which in the end...does give them an edge...

Oh...and you said grind...what grind? Leves keep me from grinding anything...and I have been playing roughly 2-3 hours a day...

You could also keep your eye on Star Wars: The Old Republic. The expected release date on that isn't until Spring of next year, but the developers have said they are trying not to make it a "grind," so that might interest you. They haven't really said anything about how long it will take to reach the level cap, though.

Had to throw that in, just in case you didn't have enough biased opinions.:D

EPIC FAIL!!! Recruiting in an FF thread...uber fail...

JUST KIDDING...I do it all the time... :p

EPIC FAIL!!! Recruiting in an FF thread...uber fail...

Yeah, it is such a fail because an FF thread won't get enough attention to get the recruitment noticed, right? :P

Sorry, just had to do that. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are interested in FF. I just don't happen to be one of them.

Personally, with as much hype is behind the game, I doubt you will need to convince people to play SW:ToR...lol...

But on another note...errr...I just got distracted and forgot... :P

Aww that lalafell looks just too irresistable though. But ain't gona plomp 50 bucks plus subscription just for a game that looks cute. My eyes are still burning.

Lalafell_female.png
aww I wish they would sell the plush.

Problem is, I can't play all year long unless I give up EVE, which I'm really quickly getting sick of the endless quest for money. If it takes 10 years to hit level cap, forget it :P
Problem is I can only play for a month and have to 'get there' within that time or wait till the next year.

So please be brutally honest with me, how long (estimated) does it take to level cap an archer?

AS for estimates of my own, judging from several powerleveling sites (they are a good estimate of levleing time under 'ideal leveling conditions'), it says level 1 to 30 takes 271 hours.
However most powerleveling sites haven't even started operation yet, and it is disheartening to see so many different companies already jumping on to provide such... services. Don't worry, I'm not gona buy anything from them, just seeing how long it takes for an expert grinder to do it. Multiply it by 3 or 4 thats my speed :(

The game has been out for 6 days...no one has any idea on how long it would take to reach the level cap...and again...this game is not about the level cap...the game does not "begin" at the level cap like some says WoW does...the game has an in-dept story and plays similar to a FF game...hence it being FFXIV... :)
