Alright, I'm itching to try some FPS action, but I refuse to commit any serious cash to it (i.e. BF2 and even CS). I'm not a big FPS guy, but I think I might enjoy it if I played with people I knew. I'll get killed a lot, but if it's cheap, who cares?

C'mon frag veterans, speak up. :)

When I first got my high speed connection I played a lot of the UT2004 demo. It may only be a demo, but still had some pretty good action and seemed to have a lot of people playing. Kinda liked the onslaught mode, even though the 2 maps got a little old. Was strongly considering buying it for a while, but got pulled into other games.

Haven't tried it in a while, but I would assume there are still servers running.

Cheap: Unreal Tournament 2004 for $12 (includes shipping) from newegg. Plenty of gametypes and content out of the box. If the official content doesn't thrill you, try out any of hundreds of mods. If you liked Halo, be sure to pick up UT2004 and try the Onslaught gametype.

Free: Nexuiz. Click here for more information about Nexuiz.

There are. You can download the demo here.

Or you could play the Halo Mod for UT2004. :)

...Which use to be found here but either it's gone or their server is just having problems.

Awesome. I knew you guys would have some good recommendations. I used to own UT 2004 GOTY edition. Pretty sweet, but I just never played it enough. Of course, that was before I found ToJ. I've never played Halo or Halo 2 (crazy, huh?) but I do love the modability of UT 2004. Might check it out.

I think I'm gonna go the UT 2004 route, eventually. I've got to find it uber-cheap though. One question: Can the content that was included in the Editor's Choice and Game of the Year editions still be downloaded?

The BF2 demo is sweet, but it's just a demo. Plus, I hate having to play games on all low settings, no matter how cool they are. I'm extremely picky like that. Hehe.

America's Army is a free FPS and it's a very good game imo.

You can check it out at americasarmy.com

Oh well, the wife won't let me re-buy UT2004 since I owned it at one point and then got rid of it. Even if it cost $2 she said I wasn't allowed.

I definitely second the America's Army recommendation. Like he said, it's totally free, plus it doesn't take a beefy system to run it. Halonic and myself used to play that all the time. Definitely check it out.

What if I buy it for you?

i would not suggest americas army, i found it rather lame, slow and repetitively boring. but thats just me. i play CS way to much and that may be why but yeah....CS is the way to go no matter the cost (which is decently cheap)

i know where u can get a CS cd key for 10 bucks.. it's legit too a friend of mine did it.. just download steam.. put in the cd key that u bought and bang ur good to go...10 bucks dude.. 10 bucks....thats like a pizza! (or 2 if u got the little ceasers way)

It's not the amount of money being spent, it's the principal. I installed America's Army today and am liking the realism of it so far. Can't be free.

NO dont go to the dark side.... its not realistic,

Maybe they got foxed?

Yes. If I wasn't using the Mac in the editors' office (with its awkward keyboard and non-Windows-like Home and End keys), I'd cruise 'round the Net to dig up some links.

If you decide to pick up UT2004, you could likely find download sites for the Editors Choice Edition content by googling "ut2004 ece downloads -fileplanet."

:D

I'd be willing to chip in a few bucks, too. I'd love to get some more ToJ players playing UT2004. It's so sad to be the only one with our super-snazzy tag when I hit the Onslaught pubs.

:(
