free music legally

My wife said she heard people on a christian station yesterday talking about a new service that is launching in November or December (i'm having memory problems on the month) that will allow people to download music for free. The music will be paid for by advertising, so artists will get paid while consumers will be able to access music for free. I don't have a lot of info yet about what will be offered or how it will work, but you can read a little about it on the company's website. I'm sure more info will be available soon.

usually the only thing you will get out of it is more spam at your email.

This will probably involve getting 5 people to do some stuipid thing and you will get an iTunes gift certificate or something. So it expands a ugly exponential number, which leads to a huge mess. For 1 user 5 others need to sign on, for 5 you need 25, for 25 you need 125, for 125 you need 625. So for the benefit of 156 you had to get 780 people.

That's a pretty big conclusion that you're jumping to with the tiny bit of information that you've been provided.

Here's a little more info from Spiral Frog's website...

SpiralFrog is a new online music destination, offering ad-supported legal downloads of audio and video content licensed from the catalogs of the world’s major and independent record labels.

SpiralFrog will be a secure environment where music lovers can satisfy their unyielding passion and thirst for music, entertainment, and information. Our site will be as multifaceted, smart, and current as the audience we hope to attract. An audience that we believe is the driving force behind the way music is created, discovered, and consumed today.

Headquartered in New York City, the SpiralFrog website will debut in December 2006.

So far they've signed agreements with UMG, EMI, and KOCH Records (details on their press page). It seems like it could be a nice alternative to pirating music.

as in ad supported downloads, where will they draw the lines to stop trying to make money? Will they suddenly bomb you with spam messages in a despirate attempt to make money?

Free is good. ;) I am just wondering about the range of songs or possible limitted downloads (Something I have seen before, but may not apply here at all)
Why not just take a wait and see attitude. No reason to trash something that hasnt happened yet, or may not even happen for that matter.
I have to agree with Arkangel. We will just have to see whenever it gets here.

Since it was being discussed on a Christian station, I'm hoping at least good quality music makes it on. :)

Free is very good, but the artists and companies need to get paid somehow. I think having it paid for through advertising is a pretty good idea as long as the ads aren't smut like most of the TV commercials and a lot of the internet advertising.
