Favorite Sandbox Games

My 11-year old son loves sandbox style games. I am not as big a fan, but I am loving Terraria. Here is a list of ones that we have tried:

Powder Toy
"The Powder Toy is a desktop version of the classic 'falling sand' physics sandbox game, it simulates air pressure and velocity as well as heat!"
This "game" is amazing. My son really likes it. You can experiment with various elements (e.g., what happens when you pour water into a container with oil, or ignite diesel). You can also create games with it. Someone recreated Portal using this tool.

Phun 2d Physics Sandbox
You can download the Phun Beta and play for free. The full version is now called Algodoo. My son played this a ton. I highly recommend it as a playground for creativity.

Terraria
This is our new love. Can't get enough of this and play as a family. This is one I can get into because there is enough character progression and goals to keep me going.

Minecraft
Now that we have gotten into Terraria, I think that we may try Minecraft. But we will need to get tired of Terraria first.

What are your favorite sandbox style games? Can you recommend any new ones for us to try?

Dwarf Fortress. I recommend getting a graphic tileset like Mayday's (my fav). It's motto is 'Losing is Fun'. Truer words have not been spoken about this game.

A word of caution though, this game is incredibly deep and fairly complex. It is however, totally worth the time it takes to learn. If you want to know the kind of epic that comes out of the game this story from the PA Forums is but a taste. (language warning though, story is clean but the replies are, well it's Penny Arcade).

I used to read quite a bit about DF on RockPaperShotgun.com. I appreciate the tileset recommendation, it makes the game look a bit more palatable. However, the complexity may keep me away until I have more time on my hands. Plus, there is no multi-player, and it is hard for me to justify playing a game without including my wife and/or son.
