If you are Canadian....its National election time! This is the day to vote for your new Prime Minister! Get out and mark your "x" on your ballot!

The politics of Canada are built within the framework of a Constitutional Monarchy and a Parliamentary Government. The head of state is the Queen (or King) of England, represented by the Governor General of Canada. We have no say in our head of State, we only can vote for the people willing to represent our interestest in Parliament, not the Senate or head of State, which are all appointed. We can also not vote for people unwilling to represent us in the House of Common simply because if they were willing to have a seat in the Common, they would run for their constituancy. There are many independants who do run but you can not vote for somebody not on the ballot. If you want to vote for your friend Joe Blow, then you have to convince Joe Blow to run for the seat that respresents your constituency.

Not being able to put in Joe Blows name does not constitute a lack of free will. Actually quite the opposite, it supports the free will of those who do not wish to run for office not to be voted in to a positition they did not want.

Can I ask whether Canada is looking to have a referendum on a republic any time soon. Our new PM is looking to push us into a republic sometime in the next 5 years and I was wondering whether the same move was on over there.

Not going to happen at all. There tends to be an anomisity between the centralized population of Ontario\Quebec towards anything remotely associated with the US.

Even mentioning a private health care system gets people thinking "Oh no, we don't want to Americanize our health care" even if you are talking about a combine private\public system that is in Sweden. I think that mentioning a Republic like the US will simply cause a good deal of backlash.

Note: Voting is voluntarily.

They do not send a ballot by mail to everyone in Canada. If they do, where's mine?

Also, not everyone is into Governments and Politics.

vibro..please remember this is about voting in canada and not the United States and that this comment from GP was not an affront to you or the United States.

I did not want any Canadians reading these forums who have read about write-ins thinking it is something that they can do in Canada, and ultimately spoil their ballot, which would be sad in that now your voice counts for nothing.

So yea....election over...Stephen Harper is the Prime Minister of Canada again with the Conservative party forming a minority government with 143 seats...up 19, taken from Liberal ridings. Record low voter turnout.

Is that due to apathy or was the winner so clear there was no point?

and what is the big deal with free will anyways? My sinful nature certainly could use less of it.

I think its more to do with apathy. I know people have been saying that we didn't need this election and that it was called too soon but the reality is, it was the second longest running minority in Canada's history and parliament was simply not working. What's the alternative? Elected officials in the house accomplishing nothing other then yelling at each other and collecting a paycheque? The notion of that drives me insane.
