How to make lightsaber effects with GIMP? I tried and made somewhat of a lightsaber but it looks laaame... I'll keep trying though, but it'd be easier if there was an actual method to it :P
 
Within secondlife we used lots and lots of alpha layers to simulate the "glow" effect. I am guessing the right combination of blur would cause the same effect. Probably 2 layers, the inner portion of the blade, then the outer. Use a gaussian blur and you might come out with something resembling the blade.

To increase quality a little you can use the "shrink" selection utility in gimp to feather the edges to make em more round. Of course making the blade something besides a square can help also :P
